Summit Lake center to serve as cooling center during heat wave

Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center on Wednesday, July 15, to provide a cooling center for residents in need. 

The center at 380 W. Crosier St. will be open between 9 a.m. and  9 p.m., the city announced in a news release.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland says a heat advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. July 15 in parts of northern Ohio, including Summit County. The high is expected to reach 94, and heat index values of up to 103 are expected in the area.

All other city of Akron community centers  will be open during their normal business hours. The city says it will continue to monitor temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary.

The weather service also says an air quality advisory will also be in effect July 15. Ground-level ozone or pollution will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Children, the elderly and those with breathing difficulties should monitor their outdoor activity, the weather service says.
