Shooting along Interstate 77 leads to charges against Canton man

CANTON − A 38-year Canton man is being held on aggravated robbery and felonious assault charges after police accused him of shooting several rounds at a car on Interstate 77.

The man also faces a felony charge of discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises. The car, which was exiting the highway at Fulton Road NW, was being driven by a woman he knows.

The man and woman are listed in police reports as residing at the same address on Kirby Avenue NE.

Several people called 911 around 12:28 p.m. Dec. 20, police reports said. They reported that a man had gotten out of a vehicle at the southbound I-77 exit onto Fulton. He then shot a gun multiple times at the car.

The woman drove her damaged vehicle to the nearby Circle K. Police in a criminal complaint said surveillance video footage at the Circle K showed the man armed with a handgun followed her, struck her car window and demanded that she give up her phone.

The man was arraigned Dec. 22 in Canton Municipal Court. He is at the Stark County Jail on cash or surety bond of $250,000.

A message seeking comment was left for his court-appointed attorney.

When police officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, both the man and woman had left, according to a police report. They were later located.
