Roundup: Licking County League baseball games go to wire

Brody Rodgers singled home the tying run and later scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball April 23, helping the Licking Valley baseball team surge past visiting Newark Catholic in Licking County League play.

The Green Wave scored five runs in the top of the first inning before rain suspended play April 22. The Panthers (11-1, 8-0) shut out NC (8-4, 5-3) the rest of the way, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning, one in the fourth and three more in the sixth.

Jett Vanover and Adam West each threw three scoreless innings of relief, combining to allow two hits and strike out five. Brandt Lictenauer totaled two hits and two runs, and Brady Croak added a two-run single, Zane Hancock a hit, a run and an RBI and Zane Hochschild two runs.

Malone Hutchison and Kane Stephey led the Green Wave with two hits and a run apiece. Hutchison also drove in a run, and Max Moore added a hit, a run and an RBI and Hal Gillespie a hit and a run.

Northridge wins at Watkins

Braden Yoder racked up three hits, including a double, three runs and three RBIs as Northridge used back-to-back six-run innings in the fourth and fifth to break away for a 13-7 victory at Watkins Memorial in LCL play.

Collin Matheson added three hits, including a triple, two runs and three RBIs, Riley Reeves a hit, a run and two RBIs and Sam Miller a hit, two runs and an RBI for the Vikings (9-3, 6-2), who remained in a first-place tie with Heath in the Cardinal Division. Gus Cermak struck out two and allowed six hits and one earned run in four innings of relief.

Cam Burt recorded three hits and three runs out of the leadoff spot for the Warriors (7-5, 5-3). Jax Dotson added two hits, a run and three RBIs, T.J. Griffith two hits, a run and an RBI and Ben Coffman two hits and a run.

Heath wins at Mount Vernon

Danny Gould notched a hit, a run, and three RBIs as Heath rallied past host Mount Vernon (2-9, 1-7) to grab a 13-6 victory in LCL play to remain in a first-place tie with Northridge in the Cardinal Division.

Quentin Sunkle, Jamison Walsh and Tyler Marks each knocked in two runs and combined to score four, and Trevor Enders added two hits and two runs and Carter Mason three runs after three walks for the Bulldogs (8-4, 6-2), who scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning and six in the seventh. Macksen Matthews allowed seven hits and two unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings of relief.

Granville beats Heights

Jackson McMillan struck out six and allowed four hits and three runs in six innings, pitching Granville to a 6-3 victory at Licking Heights in LCL-Buckeye play.

McMillan also notched two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI for the Blue Aces, and Luke Jakobowski added a hit and two RBIs, Luke Bosse a hit, a run and an RBI and Jakob Culver and Jake Johnson a hit and a run apiece for the Blue Aces (5-5, 5-3). Chase Shepherd struck out all three batters in the seventh inning to get the save.

Maxim Fink led the Hornets (2-9, 2-6) with a double, a run and an RBI. Remy Alcorn and Lance Burkhart added a hit and a run and Zach Bricker a hit and an RBI.

GCA wins on road

Josh Benvie struck out 12 in a two-hitter, pitching Granville Christian to a 12-1 victory at Northside Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Benvie also homered for the Lions (4-7, 3-3). Aiden Geiger added three hits, including two doubles, a run and three RBI, Aidan Rhoads a triple and a double and two runs and Samuel Merritt and Crete Johnson two hits and two runs apiece.

Utica nipped in eighth

Zanesville (7-7, 3-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the eighth, sending visiting Utica to a 7-6 loss in LCL play.

Elijah Bland totaled two hits, two runs and an RBI to lead Utica (4-11, 2-6). Braxton Fisher added a hit, a run and two RBI, Nate Hite a hit, a run and an RBI and Jaxson Riggs a hit and two runs.

SOFTBALL

Valley blanks NC

Tori Baughman threw the final six innings of a seven-hit shutout, pitching Licking Valley to a 5-0 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in LCL play.

Baughman struck out four without a walk for the Panthers (13-0, 9-0). She also hit a solo home run and an RBI double, and Emory Whisner and Emma Flowers added home runs with Hailey Mueller contributing a hit and a run.

Veronica Bailey led the Green Wave (9-5, 5-4) with three hits. She and Aly Rothweiler combined to strike out seven and allow six hits. 

Heights edges Granville

Natalie Mahoney induced a ground out to strand two runners in the top of the seventh inning, securing Licking Heights’ 3-2 victory against visiting Granville in LCL-Buckeye play.

Mahoney struck out seven and scattered four hits. Hayley Stout, Lily Reich and Hailey Anderson led the Hornets (11-6, 5-4) with two hits and a run apiece, and Emma Sagle added a double and two RBIs.

Bella Metcalf and Carly Wollenberg led the Blue Aces (6-11, 2-7) with a hit and a run apiece, and Avary King added a hit and an RBI and Hailey Dehnel an RBI. Kaylee Watkins struck out three and allowed two earned runs.

Watkins beats Northridge

Sierra Fuchs homered as a part of a three-hit day and knocked in three runs, leading Watkins Memorial to an 11-0 victory against visiting Northridge in LCL play.

Bryna Davis and Gracie Gerhardt also homered, combining for three hits and four RBIs, and Paisley Conley added two hits, including a double, and two runs for the Warriors (12-5, 6-3). Cori Groothuis and Morgan Gerhardt struck out three apiece in a five-inning, two-hit shutout.

Gracie Smith and Ashlynn Mauger each singled for the Vikings (6-10, 1-8).

Utica wins at Zanesville

Kiersten Hull totaled three hits, three runs and an RBI, sparking Utica in a 10-2 victory at Zanesville in LCL play.

Emily Meyers and Kenzie Fletcher each homered, combining for four runs and three RBIs, and Kaitlin Evans added two hits, a run and an RBI for Utica (9-6, 5-4). Lillian Laymon and Emma Scarberry struck out five apiece, combining to allow five hits and one earned run.

Newark falls late

Pickerington Central scored four runs in the bottom of sixth inning and five in the seventh, stunning Newark and sending the visiting Wildcats to a 12-11 defeat in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Maygen Woody and Savannah Woody, who hit two doubles, each recorded three hits and combined for eight RBIs to lead the Wildcats (2-14, 1-9). Lexi Shanaberg homered and scored four runs on the day, and Bella Keck added three hits and three runs and Mallory Back two hits and two runs.

Heath drops road game

Andrea Chaney homered for Heath on April 22 in an 11-1 loss at Mount Vernon in LCL play.

Addison Purdy added a hit for the Bulldogs (2-10, 1-8).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newark falls to Gahanna

Miles Drake filled the stat sheet with 16 kills, 10 assists and 10 blocks for Newark in a loss to visiting Gahanna, 23-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-22.

Zalyn Hanzey added eight kills and 27 digs, Koby Watson seven kills and 10 assists and Blake Britt 24 digs for the Wildcats.
