Oheneba Asenso piled up four goals May 7, sparking the Newark boys lacrosse team in a 13-4 victory against visiting Canal Winchester to claim the Thunder Chief Trophy.
Kolin Clark and Colton Loudermilk added three goals apiece, Dylan Reed two goals and two assists and Tanner Morgan a team-high three assists for the Wildcats, who scored six goals in the second quarter to overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Landon Sifford and Matthew Simpson combined for 11 saves.
Newark hosts Canal again at 6 p.m. May 14 to open play in the Division I tournament.
BOYS TENNIS
Watkins sweeps
Watkins Memorial did not drop a set in a 5-0 victory against visiting Teays Valley.
Singles winners were Graham Smith, 6-1, 6-1, Matthew Reid, 6-2, 6-1, and Wyatt Meade, 6-1, 6-2, for the Warriors (12-5). Doubles winners were Gavin Adelman and Nathan Walter, 6-0, 6-0, and Jeffrey Smith and Nic Garabrandt, 6-1, 6-2.
SOFTBALL
Heights outlasts Lakewood
Lily Reich’s walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Hayley Stout, lifting Licking Heights to a 3-2 victory against visiting Lakewood in Licking County League play.
Stout totaled two hits, two runs and an RBI out of the leadoff spot, and Amaila Thompson added a hit and a run and Cassidy Kasiara two hits for the Hornets (13-7, 7-5). Natalie Mahoney pitched all 10 innings, striking out 10 and scattering seven hits.
Allie Stimmel also went the distance for the Lancers (14-9, 8-6), striking out eight and allowing eight hits and two earned runs. She recorded two hits and an RBI, and Aleah Jackson added a double and a run and Riley Lloyd a double and an RBI.
Johnstown wins title
Lucia Kuhn homered twice and knocked in five runs, powering Johnstown to a 12-1 victory at Zanesville (0-19, 0-15) to clinch the LCL-Cardinal Division championship.
Violet Wentzel also homered and doubled, and Abigail Wood added two doubles and an RBI, Addy Zak and Riley Stefanick a hit and two RBIs apiece and Lucy Edwards a hit and an RBI for the Johnnies (18-4-1, 11-3). Stefanick also struck out five in 2⅔ innings of relief.
Valley still perfect
Chloe Cooperrider’s two-run double gave Licking Valley the lead and Tori Baughman followed with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 12-8 victory against visiting Watkins Memorial, completing the Panthers’ perfect run through the LCL.
Madison Evans homered as a part of a three-hit day, driving in four runs, and Emma Flowers also homered with Alexa Gilliam adding a triple and two RBIs for the Panthers (20-0, 16-0). Morgan Nethers struck out two and allowed six hits and three runs in four innings of relief.
Sierra Fuchs was a perfect 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Warriors (16-7, 10-5). Alli Langwasser added two hits to reach 100 for her career and two RBIs, Marlee Gerhardt a hit and two runs and Bryna Davis and Paisley Conley a double and a run apiece.
Utica wins at home
Kiersten Hull racked up three hits, including a double, and scored twice, fueling Utica in an 8-5 victory against visiting Big Walnut.
Hull also struck out three and allowed three earned runs in a complete game for Utica (12-10). Kenzie Fletcher and Kaitlin Evans each homered and drove in two runs, and Katie Kidd added two hits and a run and Makena Wilson and Addi Moore a double and an RBI apiece.
BASEBALL
GCA blanks Liberty
Matthew Riedel struck out 13 in a two-hit shutout, pitching Granville Christian to a 4-0 victory at Liberty Christian in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.
Aiden Geiger led the Lions (9-8, 7-3) with a hit, a run and an RBI. Aidan Rhoads added a double and a run and Jordan Stump and Crete Johnson a hit and a run apiece.
Dawson Kamppi struck out 13, allowing eight hits and three earned runs for the Eagles (5-9, 3-7). Jackson Cecil singled twice.
Lakewood nips Utica
Jaxson Marlo relieved and retired the final three batters, including two by strikeout, with two runners on base, preserving Lakewood’s 5-4 victory against visiting Utica in LCL-Cardinal play.
Evan Moore led the Lancers (6-14, 3-11) with two hits, including a double and a run, and he also struck out seven and allowed five hits and three earned runs in six innings. Marlo, Grayson Ullman and Carter Davis added a hit and a run each and Garrett Hardway and Carson Pound a hit and an RBI apiece.
Elijah Bland led Utica (5-17, 3-11) with a hit and three RBIs, and Jaxson Riggs added a hit, two runs and an RBI and Aaron Hays a double and two runs. Riggs also struck out four and allowed eight hits and four earned runs in six innings.
