Roundup: Granville girls, Licking Heights boys win Newark Catholic Invitational titles

Ayla Cook had a hand in three victories May 8, leading the Granville girls track team to the championship during the Newark Catholic Invitational at the Evans Athletic Complex.

Cook crossed in a time of 16.06 seconds to win the 100-meter hurdles, and she also won the 300 hurdles (50.77) and combined with Hope Mahl, Abby Green and Grace Largent to win the 400 relay (52.99). The Blue Aces racked up 128.7 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Licking Heights’ 90.

Sophia Poling won the 1,600 (5:18.85) and Elsa Tonnessen the 800 (2:31.17), and they joined Avery Ogg and Blake Witter on the winning 3,200 relay (10:23.98) for the Blue Aces. Sophie Price and Addison McClelland also each cleared 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump and joined Lakewood’s Jaylie Maas among a five-way tie for first.

Temiloluwa Jaf-ogunlayi won the 100 (11.97) and 200 (25.40) to lead Heights. Addison Caudill won the 3,200 (11:37.17), and the foursome of Aniyah Jackson, Kourtney-Nicole Rose, Olivia Fink and Neveah Lawrence won the 800 relay (1:52.84).

Johnstown’s Ava Ruffle won the long jump (14-8) and joined Allison Bonito, Audrey McCrady and Mia Beavers on the winning 1,600 relay (4:36.97). Northridge’s Ava Travis won the 400 (1:00.43).

In the boys meet, Alex Amartey won three field events, taking the high jump (5-10), shot put (48-7) and discus (144-11) for Heights, leading the Hornets to the team championship. They totaled 111 points, edging Fredericktown’s 106.5.

Jalynn Fillmore won the 100 (10.85), and he joined Cameron Gladney, Cayden Cross and Similoluwa Jaf-ogunlayi on the winning 400 relay (45.17).

Heath’s Ryan Baker won the 1,600 (4:41.55) and 3,200 (10:03.29). Teammate Dayvian McIntyre won the long jump (18-6.5).

Northridge’s Nathan Burkey won the 300 hurdles (40.33). Johnstown’s Cameron Beverick matched him in the 800 (2:03.27) as did Lakewood’s Derrick Norwood in the 200 (22.82).

SOFTBALL

Lakewood beats Johnstown

Cora Redman’s two-run double and Ashlyn Carder’s following two-run single highlighted a five-run bottom of the fifth inning, lifting Lakewood to a 6-2 victory against visiting Johnstown in battle for first place in the Licking County League-Cardinal Division.

Riley Williams racked up three hits, including a double, and scored twice, and Jaycie Montie and Carly Williams each singled and scored for the Lancers (17-5, 10-4), who maintained a one-game lead on Heath. Carder struck out three and scattered seven hits.

Jenna Hochanadel doubled and singled, scored a run and drove in one for the Johnnies (10-9, 9-6). Cam Bollinger added a hit and an RBI.

Heath rallies past NC

Kyndall Spicer’s two-run double gave Heath the lead for good and Sydney Cottrell’s two-run home run later capped a five-run bottom of the sixth inning, giving the Bulldogs an 8-4 victory against visiting Newark Catholic in LCL-Cardinal play.

Spicer scored three runs, and Sophia Yanka added two doubles and two runs, Lexi Purington two hits, a run and an RBI and Savannah Lawson a hit and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (12-11, 9-5). Shelby Moore allowed one earned run in 4⅓ innings, and Kylie Green struck out two and allowed one hit in 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

Veronica Bailey led the Green Wave (6-12, 4-10) with two hits, including a solo home run. Avery Sullivan added a hit and a run.

Utica beats Northridge

Kiersten Hull racked up four hits, five runs and three RBIs for Utica in a 23-7 victory at Northridge in LCL-Cardinal play.

Kaitlin Evans hit two home runs and knocked in five runs. Avery Rine added two hits, a run and two RBI and Kenzie Fletcher a double, four runs and two RBIs for Utica (8-12, 5-8).

Kadance Adkins homered and knocked in two runs for the Vikings (4-16, 0-14). Josie VanFossen added two hits and two runs, Kaitlyn Angus two hits and an RBI and Camryn Moore a hit, two runs and an RBI.

Granville wins at home

Sophia Patena hit three home runs for the second time in eight days and drove in seven runs in Granville’s 17-4 victory against visiting Zanesville (1-18, 1-13) in LCL-Buckeye play.

Megan Lodge homered and drove in four runs, and Aubrey Lackey added four hits and Bella Metcalf two hits and three runs for the Blue Aces (6-14, 5-9). Claire Edwards struck out four in four innings.

Liberty beats Torah

Audrey Soliday piled up three hits and four runs for Liberty Christian in an 18-4 victory against visiting Torah Academy.

Madison Looney, Jerynn Miller and Alissa Windle added three hits each, combining for seven runs and four RBIs, and Olivia DiYanni knocked in four runs with a triple and a single for the Eagles (2-9). Miller also struck out eight.

Heights falls on road

Natalie Mahoney struck out six and allowed six hits for Licking Heights in a 3-0 loss at Liberty Union.

Mahoney also recorded the lone hit for the Hornets (12-9).

BASEBALL 

Heath stuns NC 

Heath rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings before Cam Stephens’ two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning gave the Bulldogs (12-4, 9-3) a 10-9 victory against visiting Newark Catholic, extending their lead to three games in the LCL-Cardinal Division.

Tannar Patterson had a clutch two-run single in the seventh-inning rally, and he also struck out five in three one-hit scoreless innings of relief for the Bulldogs. Stephens piled up five hits, and Connor Corbett added four hits, four runs and an RBI.

Alex Nagel led the Green Wave (9-8, 5-8) with two hits, two runs and four RBIs. Miller Hutchison added a triple and double and three RBIs and Hal Gillespie two hits and two runs. Kane Stephey allowed one run in four innings, and Hutchison allowed two hits and one run in 3⅔ innings of relief.

Johnstown wins at Lakewood 

Conner Sullivan’s three hits, a run and an RBI fueled Johnstown in a 9-2 win at Lakewood in LCL-Cardinal play.

Sam Marasek added two hits, a run and an RBI, Sevi Chiddention a double, three runs and an RBI and Carter Holbrook a hit and two RBIs for the Johnnies (9-8, 5-7). Landon Larason allowed two runs in four innings before Braeden Archibald struck out five in three two-hit scoreless innings to close it out.

Carter Davis doubled and singled and scored a run to lead the Lancers (11-7, 7-6). Carson Anderson added a hit, a run and an RBI.

Watkins knocks off Valley

Bradley Vincent struck out eight and scattered seven hits, pitching Watkins Memorial to a 4-2 victory against visiting Licking Valley in LCL-Buckeye play.

Brayden Windnagel singled in a run and later scored in a three-run bottom of the fourth for the Warriors (8-8, 7-5). Cam Burt added a hit, a run and an RBI, Jax Dotson and Tyler Vincent a hit and a run apiece and Aydan Guthrie an RBI squeeze bunt.

Silas Kyle led the first-place Panthers (14-4, 11-2) with two hits and an RBI, and Adam West and Zane Hancock added a hit and a run apiece. Evan Roberts struck out four and allowed five hits and four runs in four innings.

Liberty wins at home

Jackson Cecil struck out eight in 4⅓ no-hit innings, pitching Liberty Christian to a 5-2 victory against visiting Northside Christian (1-7, 1-5) in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Dawson Kamppi doubled and singled and scored three runs to lead the Eagles (3-5, 1-4). Jacob Widmer added a hit, a run and an RBI and Cecil a double and two RBIs.

GCA cruises

Bentley Johnson and Aiden Geiger notched three hits apiece and combined for 11 RBIs in Granville Christian’s 17-2 victory against Genoa Christian at Berliner Park.

Aidan Rhoads added three hits and three runs and Jordan Stump two hits and an RBI for the Lions (11-3). Geiger struck out four and allowed three hits in five innings.

Newark drops home game

Bodie Smith recorded two of the three hits for Newark in a 5-0 loss to visiting Pickerington Central (10-6, 7-4) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Seth Fish also singled for the Wildcats (8-5, 8-3) who fell a half-game behind co-leaders Lancaster and Teays Valley. Evan Humphrey and Hunter Hammond combined to strike out nine.

Granville falls at home

A five-run second inning for visiting Mount Vernon (11-6, 8-4) sent Granville to a 9-4 defeat in LCL-Buckeye play.

Wilson Wells led the Blue Aces (15-4, 11-3) with two hits, a run and two RBIs, and Jacob Smith, Luke Bosse and Jakob Culver added a hit and a run each. Jackson McMillan struck out six and allowed two earned runs in 4⅔ innings of relief.

Heights drops home game

Peyton Pennington doubled and knocked in three runs for Licking Heights in an 18-11 loss to visiting Dublin Scioto.

Maxim Fink added two hits, a run and an RBI, Brady Pennington two hits and two runs and Zach Bricker a hit, a run and two RBIs for the Hornets (3-14). 

BOYS TENNIS

Granville sweeps

Granville did not drop a set in beating visiting Newark 5-0.

Sam Pfau, 6-0, 6-0, Purin Songrug, 6-0, 6-1, and Alex Organ, 6-1, 6-0, won singles matches for the Blue Aces. Owen White and Benjamin Prokop, 6-0, 6-1, and Jack Hann and Will Heckman, 6-1, 6-0, won doubles matches.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Granville wins on road

Camryn Goss scored four goals, leading Granville’s balanced attack in a 14-7 victory at Westerville North.

Edi Fisher and Ellie Brower added three goals apiece, and Evie Sanders and Brecken Kennedy two goals apiece for the Blue Aces. Sanders also fielded eight ground balls and caused four turnovers, and Ellie Alexander made six saves.
