Residents displaced after house fire damages three Columbus homes

A fire damaged three houses on Columbus’ Southeast Side.

Columbus Division of Fire Lt. Nick Davis said firefighters responded to a house fire on the 6700 block of Gormsley Drive just after 5 a.m. June 23. The firefighters found one house was on fire, and the two neighboring houses were at risk.

Davis said no one was injured, but two of the houses were badly damaged. The third house suffered damage to the siding, but the family was allowed to return after firefighters checked the home.

The first house to catch fire is likely a total loss, Davis said. The other badly damaged house could be as well.

The fire started in the back of the house. Davis said it’s possible a grill outside the home may have caused the fire, or the fire may have originated in a shed. Arson investigators remained on scene that morning to investigate the cause of the fire and are looking into whether there were electrical issues in the shed.

The fire was a two-alarm fire, meaning about 35 units and about 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, Davis said.

The Red Cross is assisting 11 displaced residents.
