The bridge is just north of the intersection of Johnnycake Road and Old Forge Road over Breakneck Creek. County Engineer Larry Jenkins said minor work was beginning this week, with the bridge to be fully closed for reconstruction June 30. The bridge and all roadway work are expected to be completed by November.

Portage County commissioners awarded a contract for the bridge replacement to Stanley Miller Construction Co., Inc. of East Sparta, which bid $739,787, less than the engineer’s estimate of $984,950. A federal grant will cover 95% of the project cost. Mannik and Smith Group Inc. has been hired to perform the construction contract administration and inspection.

The contract includes installation of a new bridge structure, including approach work matching road conditions. A detour for the closure will be posted in the field and on the county engineer’s website.

Those with questions about the project can contact Mike Collins, project manager at the engineer’s office, at 330-296-6411.
