Our Town Millersburg series continues with focus on historic district, nursing home empire

The third Our Town Millersburg program will be presented by the Holmes County Historical Society on Thursday, Sep. 11, at 7 p.m. at American Hall Venue on the square in Millersburg.

Holmes County Historical Society Director Mark Boley explained that three topics will be presented: Millersburg’s National Historic District, Maxwell Brothers store/Fishers restaurant and the history of Castle Nursing Homes.

Boley will talk about the Millersburg National Historic District and how it got the designation, including the original paperwork, along with original maps of the district.

WKLM Radio Personality Melissa Patrick will give a history of one of the oldest continuously operating men’s clothing stores of its time, plus the connection to the Fisher restaurant in downtown Millersburg.

Local historian Elaine Maag will conclude the presentation by providing a historical rundown of the Castle Nursing Home.

“This is a fascinating story of how Theodore and Eileen Dehass built an empire and became one of the largest employers in Holmes County,” Boley said.

Maag sat down recently with Ted Dehass, the oldest Dehass grandson for an oral history.

The program will end with a question and answer session. Memorabilia will be on display at the presentation and guests are encouraged to bring any related items for display.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. on the third floor of the American Hall Venue and will also be streamed live on the WKLM Youtube channel.
