Boosted by record-setting performances from two state qualifiers, the Fairfield Union boys track and field team won its second consecutive Division II regional championship and fourth overall May 31 at Muskingum University.
The Falcons (76) finished ahead of runner-up Gnadenhutten Indian Valley (65) in Region 7.
The Fairfield Union girls finished third (60) behind champion Athens (73).
The top four finishers in each event, along with two at-large berths from throughout the state, advanced to state June 6 and 7 at Ohio State’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“Our guys and girls really rowed the boat (May 31) with a big team effort,” coach Rob Myers said. “Even athletes who didn’t score were fighting until the end, trying to find a point, and when they were done, they stayed to cheer on their teammates until the end. That’s what team is about. That’s what makes me proud to be their coach.”
Chayse Lipscomb led the boys, setting regional records in the 110-meter hurdles (13.75 seconds) and 300 hurdles (36.68). Andrew Walton did the same in the 1,600, winning in a regional record 4:12.9.
Katherine Welsh, Kyla Gasser, Kaeda Miller and Averey Cottrill helped lead the girls by winning the 800 relay (1:46.08).
In the Division II, Region 6 meet at Lexington, Beechcroft freshman Brittany Douglas won the 100 hurdles (15.3) and 300 hurdles (44.34) and River Valley freshman Finley Blevins won the pole vault (11 feet, 4 inches).
In the boys meet, Marion-Franklin’s Dawayne Galloway won the 100 (10.77).
In the Division II, Region 8 meet at Piqua, Ready’s Mya Riggins won the girls 100 hurdles (14.58).
In the boys meet, Mount Gilead’s Will Baker won the 1,600 (4:25.67) and finished second in the 3,200 (9:22.49).
London’s Jahvaughn Graham, Blake Reay, June Turner and Stevie Gravely won the 400 relay (42.81) and teammate Cameron Carn won the 800 (1:54.96).
