Ohio State wrestling vs Penn State instant reaction, score, Highlights

It was supposed to be a big one in the world of college wrestling involving YOUR Ohio State Buckeyes, traveling to take on No. 1 Penn State, a dual meet many have been pointing to since early on in the season when it became clear that OSU was going to have one whale of a squad.

In the end, it was a dominant performance by the Nittany Lions, with Ohio State managing to win just one matchup en route to a 36-5 loss in the Bryce Jordan Center. We were there throughout to bring you score updates, highlights, and commentary, and you can go back through the action below for how things unfolded.

Here’s the sad state of affairs from Friday night.

Mirasola wins on a takedown and puts Ohio State out of its misery

It was honestly an embarrassing night for the Buckeyes, capped off by a sudden death takedown on a counter by Mirasola, and he wins 4-1. Final Team Score: 36-5

We are headed to sudden death again

Both wrestlers get only an escape throughout the three periods, and we’ll go to overtime tied at one point apiece.

Feldman leads after an escape

He’s up 1-0 after one period. Mirasola nearly gets a takedown, but Feldman gets to his feet in time, and the challenge brick is thrown to no avail by Penn State.

No score after one period

Not a whole lot of action from either heavyweight, and we go to the second period scoreless. Feldman will start in the down position.

One merciful heavyweight match to go

Nick Feldman (3) will try to get OSU some more points when he wrestles against Connor Mirasola (12).

It’s another bonus point win for Penn State

Barr gets the major decision win by a score of 10-1, and OSU is getting run out of the Bryce Jordan Center. Team Score: Penn State 33, Ohio State 5

Barr is in command after two periods

He extends his lead to 7-0 with Geog starting in the down position to begin the third period.

Geog is behind after one period

The Penn State wrestler gets a takedown and leads 3-0 after period one.

Time for the 197-pound match

Ohio State sorely needs to stop the bleeding for respectability. It’s Luke Geog (10) for Ohio State vs. Josh Barr (1) for Penn State.

Rocco Welsh wins with time running out for Penn State

He gets a couple of takedowns, one as time is expiring, and wins by a score of 7-5. Team Score: Penn State 29, Ohio State 5

Fishback still leads after two

He’s up 4-0 after two periods after an escape.

Fishback hunting for the upset

He leads 3-0 after one period with a ton of riding time. He staves off an escape attempt as the period ends.

Another underdog at 184 pounds incoming for the Buckeyes

Dylan Fishback will try to upset No. 1 Rocco Welsh for Penn State.

Penn State gets another tech fall

Schierl somehow escapes the pin, but still loses to Haines by tech fall, and the Nittany Lions are embarrassing Ohio State. Team Score: Penn State 26, Ohio State 5

Haines is in control after one period

He gets a takedown and a near fall and leads 8-1.

Next up is 174 pounds

Penn State has another No. 1-ranked wrestler with Levi Haines going against T.J. Schierl.

Messinbrink gets the major decision

He wins by a score of 12-2 and continues the domination by Penn State. Team Score: Penn State 21, Ohio State 5

The Penn State wrestler extends his lead

Messinbrink gets another take down and an escape and now leads 8-0 heading to the 3rd period.

Messenbrink gets a quick takedown and leads after one

He’s up 4-0 heading into the second period.

Ohio State will try to rebound at 165 pounds

The Buckeyes will trot out Paddy Gallagher (16) against the No.1 wrestler in the weight class, the Nittany Lions’ Mitchell Messinbrink. It’ll be a tall order when we resume action.

Penn State’s Duke gets the pin

And Penn State is in full control as we hit the intermission after Duke gets the fall. Team Score: Penn State 17, Ohio State 5

PJ Duke is cruising for Penn State

He leads by a commanding 15-4 score after one period. He’s hunting more bonus points for the Nittany Lions.

The 159-pound matchup is next

Daxton Chase will be a heavy underdog against PJ Duke (4).

Penn State lodges a tech fall

Van Ness scores in bunches and wins by a tech fall score of 20-4. The Nittany Lions extend the lead. Team Score: Penn State 11, Ohio State 5

Van Ness now leads big after two periods

He opens up a sizeable 13-3 lead heading to the last period after three takedowns.

Penn State’s Van Ness leads after one period

We are now in the 149-pound weight class, and Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness is up 3-0 against fill-in Brogan Fieldingfor Ohio State after one period.

Ohio State is on the board

Mendez does indeed get the tech fall, 18-2, and OSU is on the board. Team Score: Penn State 6, Ohio State 5

Multiple scores for Mendez in the second period

He has opened up a big lead, nearly getting a pin with two near falls, and it’s 15-1 after two periods. We are on the verge of another tech fall again for Mendez.

Ohio State’s Mendez gets a takedown

He leads 3-0 after one period. The Penn State wrestler is hanging tough and will start in the down position.

Let’s see if Mendez can get Ohio State on the board

He’s won 22-straight and will be going against Braden Davis (12).

Penn State’s Blaze wins it in dramatic fashion

Davino does keep Blaze down for over ten seconds, but the Penn State wrestler gets a reversal and wins it. OSU needed to get both of those first matches and at least the split to have a shot to pull off the upset today. It’ll be a significant challenge to keep it close now. Team Score: Penn State 6, Ohio State 0

Riding time is 9 seconds for Blaze after the first tiebreaker

The Penn State wrestler will start on the bottom, and if Davino can hang on for 10 seconds, he’ll have the upper hand in the 30-second period.

Still tied after the sudden death period

Things are still knotted up, and we are going to the tiebreakers. Davino will be on the bottom first.

We are headed to extra time again

Early on, these even matchups have wrestlers afraid to take a shot. We are 1-1 with Blaze getting the escape, and it’s sudden death time.

Ohio State’s Davino up by one after two

The same pattern is emerging. Davino leads 1-0 because of the escape. Blaze will start down with a chance to tie.

Again, no score after one

It’s like a heavyweight matchup with these wrestlers feeling each other out.

Here we go at 133 pounds

Ohio State’s Ben Davino (2) will be going against Penn State’s Marcus Blaze (4).

Penn State gets the takedown to win

Lilledahland gets the advantage, getting deep into the legs and gets the position after the scramble for the sudden death, 4-1 victory. Team Score: Penn State 3, Ohio State 0

Both wrestlers get the escape, but no other scoring as time runs out with Lilledahland almost getting a takedown. It’s 1-1 headed to sudden death.

Bouzakis leads after one

He gets the escape to be up 1-0 after one period. The Penn State wrestler will get a chance to even it from the down position.

Bouzakis and Lilledahl scramble, but neither can score through one period.
