Life felt a little empty last week with Ohio State sitting out on an off week, but that changes in a big way on Saturday.
That’s because the Buckeyes went about as far away from home as they can in the continental United States, out in Seattle to take on a very underrated Washington Huskies team that has looked awfully dynamic through the first three games of its season. OSU was favored by 8.5 points according to Vegas, actually won by more, taking control of the game and finishing with an impressive 24-6 victory in hostile environment.
We provided some live updates, reactions, and highlights during the action, and even if you followed along, you can go back through and re-live what happened in a beautiful college football setting on Saturday.
The game is officially over
Things get a little chirpy at the end, but Ohio State runs out the clock to win this one with a rather convincing 24-6 score. Nice job by the defense, and it’s kind of crazy the Buckeyes never punted but only scored 24 points. It was just that type of game. OSU will now move to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State gets another stop on defense
The Buckeyes get the ball back and we will officially be in kill-the-clock mode with just 3:18 left in the contest.
Touchdown and this one is all about over
Ryan Day rolls the dice, goes for it on 4th down, and Julian Sayin finds C.J. Donaldson out of the backfield for a touchdown to go up 24-6 with just 4:46 remaining in the game. You’ll start to see Washington fans exit the building now.
Ohio State gets a first down on a handoff but under review
Just trying to make Washington use its last time out, Bo Jackson gets 17 yards for a first down, but the play is under review. UPDATE: Called short. It’ll be fourth and inches.
Buckeyes are looking to seal the deal
Ohio State is on the move again, looking to wrap this game up inside the red zone once again. Washington takes a timeout after getting a sack, and the Buckeyes will have a 2nd and 17 and the Huskies’ 20-yard line when play resumes. The clock is now a big factor in this one.
Ohio State makes huge stop on fourth down
The Buckeyes come up huge on a fourth-down play, getting to quarterback Demond Williams and getting just enough of him to have him stumble and fall for a sack. Ohio State takes over on downs, still up 17-6 with 8:44 left in the game. Look for Ohio State to start taking some time off the clock now as the sands of the hourglass begin to run out.
Unsportsmanlike penalty keeps drive going for the Huskies
Ohio State looked to have stopped Washington, but Eddrick Houston loses his cool and swipes at the head of a Husky offensive player to extend the drive. New set of downs, game still on.
Ohio State drive stalls because of a hold, but the Buckeyes get a field goal
Ohio State suffered a holding penalty to back it up from deep in Washington territory and couldn’t convert a first down. Julian Sayin makes a good play with his legs, though, to get Jayden Fielding into an easier spot for a field goal, and he nails it to put OSU up by two scores. The Buckeyes now lead 17-6 with 13:19 left in the fourth quarter.
Buckeyes are driving as the third quarter comes to an end
The third quarter flew by, and it was a good one for Ohio State, which still leads by a score of 14-6 and is putting another drive together. The Buckeyes will have it first and ten from the Washington 21 when the fourth quarter starts. It feels like another touchdown in this one could be a huge deal.
The Ohio State defense buckles down and forces a field goal
Washington has a nice drive but can’t pay it off and has to settle for a field goal to cut the lead to 14-6. Ohio State with a clutch sack on third down to force hold things to just a three-point score instead of a touchdown. There’s 3:49 left in the third period in a game that seems to be flying along.
Ohio State extends the lead with a rushing touchdown
The Buckeyes get a little breathing room with a one-yard scoring plunge from C.J. Donaldson and now lead 14-3 with 7:19 left in the third quarter. The drive went for 75 yards on 14 plays, taking a whopping 7:41 off the clock. OSU was severely aided by a big break on that roughing the passer call there. Husky fans, players, and coaches can’t be happy about that one.
Roughing the passer call helps Ohio State extend the drive
The Buckeyes were moving the ball and got backed up on an illegal hands to the face penalty but were bailed out on a very suspect roughing the passer the call and now Ohio State is looking to notch another score again after converting on a 3rd and three to Carnell Tate. It’s first and goal Ohio State from the one-yard line.
Underway in the second half
Ohio State takes the kickoff and allows it to fall harmlessly in the end zone, then out of bounds, and will start the second half from its own 25-yard line.
Ohio State leads at the half
Washington fails to take advantage of a good punt return after a sack by Ohio State and will let the clock run out. In a game that’s been a little weird with a few mistakes and some good defense, the Buckeyes get a late score to take a 7-3 lead into the half. OSU will get the ball coming out of the locker room.
Touchdown Ohio State and Jeremiah Smith
On 3rd and 14 deep in the red zone, Ohio State gets Jeremiah Smith open underneath. Julian Sayin finds him and he catches the ball and slices through the defense for the first touchdown of the game. The Buckeyes get their first score and lead 7-3 with 1:08 left in the half. It was a 73-yard drive in 10 plays. It took up 3 and a half minutes.
Ohio State on the move
The Buckeyes have moved the ball and are doing so again just before the end of the half. Bo Jackson has done some damage from the tailback spot, and now Ohio State is inside the red zone trying to get a score before heading into the locker room. The score is 3-0, Washington with just 1:15 left in the half, and OSU is looking at a 3rd and 6.
The Huskies go for a fake and it doesn’t work
Instead of trying a 45-yard field goal, Washington attempts a fake, and the downfield option doesn’t get the call, never turns around, and the pass falls harmlessly to the ground. It could be a big momentum swing as Ohio State now takes over on its own 37-yard line with 4:39 left in the second quarter. The score remains 3-0 in the Huskies’ favor.
Washington on the move again
The Huskies are keeping the OSU defense on its heels with quick passes, play action, and the quarterback running game. They are on the move and in the red zone again.
Ohio State punts it back to Washington
The Buckeyes get one first down and then can’t get another one. Sayin scrambles and has a guy open, but throws the ball short and into the ground. The Huskies receive the punt and will take over at their own 24-yard line. The score remains 3-0 Washington with 10:36 left in the first half.
Washington gets on the board first
Despite the early run of play, Washington rebounds and goes on a long scoring drive to get the first score of the game and leads 3-0 on a 28-yarder. It’s 3-0 Washington with 14:05 left in the half. The scoring drive saw 10 plays go for 69 yards and take 5:55 off the clock.
The Huskies shoot themselves in the foot but Ohio State fumbles on the punt return
Washington had a sideline warning and a coach unsportsmanlike penalty resulting in negative plays and a punt, but Brandon Innis fumbles on the punt return, and Washington gets the ball back on its own 21-yard line. This game is wild already.
Washington comes up big with a stop on fourth down
Instead of a quarterback sneak, Ohio State hands the ball off in the backfield, and the Huskies stop OSU on fourth and 1/2 yard. The ball goes back to Washington for a first and ten from their own five-yard line. Big play there. Ohio State moves the ball but comes up empty in a big, big spot. There’s 8:40 left in the first quarter.
Julian Sayin runs for close to a first down
The Buckeye QB runs the ball and gets the first down at the five-yard line, but the play is overturned, and he’s a little shot. It’s fourth and very short. The Buckeyes are going for it.
Ohio State gets a first down on a pass play to Jeremiah Smith
The Buckeyes immediately get a first down with a six-yard pass to Jeremiah Smith, and Ohio State is on the move in Husky territory.
Ohio State gets a stop on third down on the first possession for the Huskies
Washington gets an 8-yard run on first down, but then the Buckeye defense stiffens and forces no more yards. The punt is horrible, and Ohio State will take over at midfield.
Washington will get the ball first, and here we go …
The Huskies will get the ball starting from their own 25-yard line, and it’s time to get this thing going.
