WADSWORTH — The Archbishop Hoban and Twinsburg girls basketball teams return to Wadsworth High School on Thursday, March 5, with a regional championship trophy and a state semifinal appearance up for grabs.
Hoban (19-4) and Twinsburg (21-5) are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. in the Division II, Region 5 final. The Knights topped the Tigers 52-40 in each teams’ regular-season opener Nov. 23.
The winning team Thursday leaves Wadsworth a regional champion and will play in a state semifinal Friday, March 13, against Hudson or Olmsted Falls at a time and site to be determined by the OHSAA.

What to know about Hoban’s win over Nordonia in an OHSAA girls basketball regional semifinal
Senior Niera Stevens led Hoban to an 80-42 win over Nordonia in a Division II, Region 5 semifinal Tuesday, March 3, at Wadsworth.
Hoban (19-4) went with its usual five senior starters and led 34-12 at the end of the first quarter in the matchup of Knights.
Stevens scored 12 of her 18 points in the opening eight minutes.
Hoban senior MaKenzie Grant scored 13 points and senior Amariya Davis had 10 points, three assists and three steals.
“My senior group is playing very well,” Hoban coach Pamela Davis said. “We’re very excited to be here in the regional final once again. We’ve been waiting for this day for a whole year, so hopefully my seniors have the experience to take us over the top and I have a great supporting sophomore class.
“I thought our focus, our energy and our execution was on point. … We had a lot of kids that scored tonight, and that’s what makes us dangerous.”
Hoban ran past Nordonia with other solid performances by sophomore Ella Bockmore (nine points, four assists, three steals), senior Zoey Hodge (eight points, six rebounds), sophomore Milan Pearson (seven points), junior Kate Wiedt (six points) and sophomore Kadence Golden (five points).
What to know about Twinsburg’s win over Massillon in an OHSAA girls basketball regional semifinal
Senior Kayla Cellura guided Twinsburg to a 63-57 victory over Massillon in a Division II, Region 5 semifinal Tuesday, March 3, at Wadsworth.
Twinsburg (21-5) led the majority of the matchup between Tigers, but Massillon sophomore Delaney Pierce made things very interesting in the final five minutes.
Pierce made a layup, free throw and 3-pointer to give Massillon a 53-50 lead with 3:38 to go in the fourth quarter. Twinsburg then ended the game on a 13-4 run as seniors Cellura, Mackenzie Sweeney, Taylor Dye and Christian Fletcher made big plays.
Sweeney made two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. After Dye recorded a steal and a layup with about 45 seconds on the clock to tie the score 57-57, Cellura made two free throws with 25.8 seconds remaining to give Twinsburg a 59-57 lead and Dye added two free throws with 10.5 seconds to go to make it 61-57.
“We play in tough games all year in a tough conference,” Twinsburg coach Spencer Genos said. “We went to Florida and played some tough teams there. We played in close games all year, and when push came to shove our seniors just stepped up with fantastic plays. Taylor Dye diving on the floor for loose balls. Free throws by Kayla and Taylor, Christian handling the ball off the bench. Everyone seemed to step up when it mattered most and I really loved our defense.”
Cellura, who scored 12 of her 27 points in the first quarter, also finished with five rebounds.
Cellura surpassed 1,000 career points in the first quarter, one game after Dye eclipsed 1,000 career points in a district final win over Wooster.
Fletcher totaled 14 points, four steals and four rebounds.
Sweeney scored 11 points, Dye added five points, six assists and three steals and junior Giana Taylor totaled four points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Hoban defeated North Royalton 66-38 in the Division II, Northeast 3 district final on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Canfield.
No. 1 seed Hoban jumped out to a 24-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back against No. 23 North Royalton (8-16). Knights guard Niera Stevens scored 18 points, Amariya Davis made five 3-pointers and contributed 17 points and Ella Bockmore added 10 points. Hoban’s pressure forced North Royalton into 27 turnovers.
Stevens averages around 17 points, four rebounds and two steals and is a Mercyhurst College recruit. Stevens scored 17 points to surpass 1,000 career points in a 72-17 win over Garfield in a district semifinal game. Stevens scored 33 points in a loss against South Fayette, a two-time defending 5A PIAA state champion. She also scored 27 points in a win over Padua.
Davis and MaKenzie Grant average around 11 points apiece.

Twinsburg defeated Wooster 62-34 in Division II, Northeast 2 district final at Medina on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Kayla Cellura, Taylor Dye and Jaci Hutton are players to watch for the third-seeded Tigers, who rolled past the 21st-seeded Generals (12-12). Cellura made five 3s and finished with 26 points and Dye had 17 points and had eight assists. Dye scored her 1,000th point in the fourth quarter.
Dye averages around 11 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals. She made six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points in Twinsburg’s 57-18 win over Green in a district semifinal.
Cellura averages around 11 points, two assists and two steals. Hutton averages around 11 points, three steals and two assists.
