As we enter the month of May, let’s see where high school baseball teams throughout Tuscarawas County find themselves in The Times-Reporter’s first power rankings.
Here is how Tuscarawas Country teams shake out:
10. Newcomerstown 5-9
The Trojans went 1-1 in the previous week against Inter Valley Conference foe Conotton Valley, after being outscored 20-14 in both games. Newcomerstown sits in fourth place in the North Division of the Inter Valley Conference with a record of 4-5.
Upcoming schedule: Vs. Tuscarawas Central Catholic, May 4; At Tuscarawas Central Catholic, May 6; Vs. Buckeye Trail Warriors, May 7.
9. Tuscarawas Central Catholic 3-15
The Saints are still looking to break a losing streak, as they reached eight after dropping four games last week. TCC has allowed more than 10 runs over its last eight games. The Saints have a 1-6 record in the North Division of the IVC.
Upcoming schedule: At Newcomerstown, May 4; Vs. Newcomerstown, May 6; Vs. Coventry Comets, May 9.
8. Tuscarawas Valley 5-13
The Trojans allowed 36 runs last week, going 0-3. Tusky Valley will look to get their first win on the road and are 1-9 in the South Division of the IVC.
Upcoming schedule: Vs. Hiland Hawks, May 4; At Hiland Hawks, May 6; At Fairless Falcons, May 8.
7. Claymont 7-11
After nearly defeating Indian Valley on April 27, losing 4-3, the Braves defeated Claymont 13-1 on April 29. The Mustangs were unable to get a victory last week, dropping three games. Claymont looks to get above .500 in the IVC as they currently sit at 3-5 in conference play.
Upcoming schedule: May 4, Vs. Garaway; May 6, At Garaway; May 9, Vs. Fairless
6. Garaway 7-8
The Pirates went 1-2 over the last week with both losses coming to IVC foe Sandy Valley. Garaway ended the week with a 9-0 victory over Meadowbrook. The Pirates sit in the South Division with a record of 2-6.
Upcoming schedule: May 4, At Claymont; May 6, Vs. Claymont; May 8, At Strasburg-Franklin; May 9, Vs. St. Clairsville
5. Sandy Valley 10-5
Sandy Valley extended its winning streak to five games after going 4-0 last week with victories over IVC opponents Garaway and Tuscarawas Central Catholic. During the winning streak, Sandy Valley outscored its opponents 43-16. With the victories the Cardinals improved to 5-3 in the South Division.
Upcoming schedule: May 4, Vs. Indian Valley; May 6, At Indian Valley; May 8, Chippewa; May 9, Canton South
4. Dover 11-9
After falling 16-2 to Louisville on April 27, Dover shut out Mansfield over the next two games, winning 22-0 and 19-0 on May 2. The Cardinals sit at 4-4 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
Upcoming schedule: May 6, Vs. Wooster; May 7, At Wooster; May 8, Vs. Louisville
3. Indian Valley 13-4
After starting last week with two victories over Claymont – 4-3 on May 27 and 13-1 on May 29 – the Braves saw their five-game winning streak come to an end on May 2, losing the first game of a double header to Granville 6-1. Indian Valley and Hiland are tied for first place in the South Division in the IVC with a 7-1 record.
Upcoming schedule: May 4, At Sandy Valley; May 6, Vs. Sandy Valley; May 8, At Orrville
2. Strasburg 13-4
Strasburg dropped its first game of last week to East Canton, losing 6-4. The Tigers bounced back with three wins against Tuscarawas Central Catholic and East Canton. Strasburg outscored its opponents 27-5 in all three wins. The Tigers’ 7-1 record in the North Division in the IVC is good for first place.
Upcoming schedule: May 4, Vs. Malvern; May 6, At Malvern; May 7, At Dalton; May 8, Vs. Garaway
1. New Philadelphia 14-2
New Philadelphia sits atop the first Times-Reporter power rankings, holding a 14-2 record. The Quakers defeated Ashland in both games last week, outscoring the Arrows 30-4. In the OCC the Quakers sit in first place with an undefeated 10-0 record.
