New Albany set to open new SR 605 roundabout as another closure starts

Just as one construction project is wrapping up on New Albany Condit Road/ State Route 605 through New Albany, another is about to start that will bring another months-long closure.

The intersection of New Albany-Condit Road (State Route 605) and East Walnut Street is set to reopen June 2 with a new roundabout, according to the city’s website. The intersection had been closed since March 2 for the $5 million project to realign the offset East Walnut Street intersection at New Albany-Condit/SR 605 with a multi-lane roundabout to better handle current and future traffic while improving connections for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

But now a portion of New Albany-Condit Road/ SR 605 further south between Snider Loop and Central College Road will close beginning June 1 through Aug. 18 for another project that includes widening the pavement and adding new curbs, decorative lighting, street trees and on-street parking as well as upgrading utilities and removing overhead utility lines. Crews expect to complete construction by Oct. 31, a city website about the project states.

Drivers will have access to Snider Loop leading to The Enclave subdivision. During the closure, local traffic can detour using Walton Parkway, New Albany Road East, and Central College Road. Through traffic will use U.S. 62 and State Route 37, the city website states.

During the first week or two of construction, the leisure trail on the east side of State Route 605 will remain open while crews work in the roadway or on the west side of the road. But as the project progresses, the city will implement a detour for pedestrians and cyclists along Central College Road to Steele Court, then to Snider Loop, Walton Parkway, and back to New Albany-Condit/ SR 605.

The city is also adding a pedestrian crossing at Steele Court and Central College Road to allow pedestrians to cross safely.

The road project is being done in coordination with the Steiner Builders’ development, The Hamlet at Sugar Run. The 32.6-acre development at the southwest and southeast corners of Central College Road and New Albany-Condit Road will include a mix of residential, commercial, and retail spaces around a green space along Sugar Run Creek.

The hamlet will include 52,500 square feet of commercial space; 40 multifamily residential units, 128 townhomes and 27 detached single-family homes for a total of 195 residential units; and 8 acres of parkland around the creek.

The park will include nature play equipment, a half-mile walking trail and sculptures and other artwork from local artists.
