A sweep of the regular season champs has sent Mount Union’s softball team to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Purple Raiders beat Baldwin Wallace 8-2 on Saturday to win the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament and earn the OAC’s automatic NCAA bid. They will find out who and where they will play on Monday at 11 a.m. when the selection show airs on NCAA.com.
Mount Union beat Baldwin Wallace 4-0 on Friday to reach the championship round. Saturday’s loss was just the fourth of the season for the top-seeded Yellow Jackets, who finished four games ahead of the Purple Raiders in the OAC race.
The Purple Raiders (27-12) scored three runs in the second inning to grab the lead and took command with three-run sixth.
Winning pitcher Kendyll Cahill homered and finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs. On the mound, Cahill allowed five hits and struck out three.
Kaitlyn Culver finished 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBIs for Mount Union.
Cahill, Culver and Mount Union’s Sydney Mercer and Faith Reicosky were named to the all-tournament team.
Messiah beats Mount Union women’s lacrosse in NCAA Tournament
Jordan Lewicki scored five goals to power Messiah past Mount Union 20-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Tournament in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The Falcons (14-5) built a 10-1 halftime lead and were never threatened.
Katie Clark scored two goals to lead the Purple Raiders. Reese Fuenfstueck and Eden Kesler scored the other Mount Union goals.
