Wooster City Schools is addressing mold found in several rooms at Cornerstone Elementary School, relocating affected classes and deep-cleaning the building as a precaution, according to Superintendent Gabe Tudor.
The district was recently alerted to possible mold in a small number of classrooms and immediately hired a professional mitigation company for investigation.
“The company completed a comprehensive walkthrough of the building and identified areas where scientific testing was appropriate,” Tudor said.
Seventeen rooms were tested; 12 showed normal, acceptable levels and are safe, though they’re being deep-cleaned anyway.
Mold was identified in one storage area and four instructional rooms.
“These classrooms are being temporarily relocated during the mitigation process, and parents of students in the impacted rooms were notified,” Tudor explained.
Once mitigated, retested and approved, students will return.
The district is working with the health department and experts on further steps.
“We are taking this matter seriously and acting promptly to address affected areas while minimizing disruption to the school day,” Tudor emphasized. “Our priority is, and will continue to be, providing a safe and healthy environment for all students and staff.”
