A man was fatally shot overnight in Walnut Hills, Cincinnati police said in a news release.
Just before midnight June 14, officers got a call about a shooting at the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue in Walnut Hills, the news release says. When police arrived, they found 35-year-old Torell Hemphill with a gunshot wound.
Hemphill was brought to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.
The investigation by the department’s homicide unit is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the unit at 513-352-3542.
Sixth shooting this year in Walnut Hills, second on Lincoln Avenue
This is the sixth shooting so far this year in Walnut Hills, according to city data up to June 12 and including Saturday’s shooting. By this time last year, there had been three shootings in the neighborhood.
There was another shooting on Lincoln Avenue in April. Two people had nonfatal injuries after being shot shortly before midnight April 26, city data shows.
The majority of shootings in Walnut Hills this year have been nonfatal. Only one other shooting at Park Eden, a complex for seniors on Park Avenue, turned deadly, Enquirer media partner Fox19 reported in March.
Reported shootings down citywide despite recent spate of homicides
Despite a recent spate of reported homicides by Cincinnati police in June, reported shootings are still down citywide compared to recent years, city data up to June 12 shows.
There have been 92 shootings in Cincinnati so far this year, not including Saturday’s shooting in Walnut Hills.
Shootings continue to trend downwards when comparing recent years’ data. At this point in recent years, there had been 127 shootings in 2024, 133 shootings in 2023 and 141 shootings in 2022.
