Where Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow ranks among his peers has been a hot debate in recent weeks.
Call it the typical offseason stuff. The downtime before training camps open is a hotbed for “rankings” and the like, giving everyone something to do.
Most rankings that deal with the quarterback position have Burrow comfortably in the top five, if not higher. He’s right there on most lists with Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford.
One analyst, though, doesn’t want to hear another name ahead of Burrow.
Former ESPN analyst Merril Hoge tackled the subject during a recent appearance on Trey Wingo’s podcast.
“When you think from an actual accuracy, processing, fundamental, from the pocket… nobody better,” Hoge said.
Wingo noted that fans of the Chiefs and Bills wouldn’t be too happy with that, but Hoge didn’t budge.
This follows a theme Bengals fans will recognize, of course. Those in and around the league often cite Burrow as the best, or very close to it. Outside analysts and fans tend to move him down the board a bit.
Hoge, of course, is part of that former group. He’s a former player who spent the bulk of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, of all teams, so he would know best where Burrow should rank.
