The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is celebrating the birth of a baby bonobo boy.
Born Aug. 11, his mother, Kibibi, is a first-time mom and the great-granddaughter of longtime zoo residents Susie and Jimmy. The zoo shared the news on its Facebook page, noting that Kibibi and her son are healthy and adjusting to the new life of parenthood.
Zoo staff say the baby’s father will be determined through paternity testing in the coming months. This birth marks the 18th bonobo welcomed into the zoo’s troop. The zoo has not announced a name for its newest arrival.
Bonobos first arrived at the Columbus Zoo in 1990 from the Limburgse Zoo in Belgium.
The arrival comes after the tragic death of a beloved zebra and the birth and naming of the zoo’s newborn elephant.
