Haylee Fearon, Addison Sheil lead All-Stark County girls tennis team

The county’s six state qualifiers for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I girls tennis state tournament lead the way on the All-Stark County Team selected by the coaches.

Highlighting that group are the two seniors who share honors as Stark County Girls Tennis Player of the Year — Haylee Fearon of Perry and Addison Sheil of Hoover. They each are among the six first-team All-Stark County picks in singles.

Hoover’s Sheil qualified for state in singles after winning the Division I sectional championship and finishing as the district runner-up. She dropped a three-set match in the first round of the state tournament.

Sheil’s overall record this season was 31-3, including 7-1 in the Federal League. She won the Federal League No. 1 singles title. Her overall career record is 121-16.

The co-players of the year are joined on all-county first-team singles by Hoover senior Ema Papcke, Jackson junior Ashley Helle, Jackson freshman Claire Williams and Perry freshman Makenzie Fearon.

Helle (along with doubles partner Halle Smith), Williams and the younger Fearon all advanced to state this season. Papcke qualified for state in both 2023 and 2024.

Makenzie Fearon, the Federal League’s No. 2 singles champion, compiled a 32-1 record overall. After joining her sister to win sectional and district championships, they won their first-round state tournament match in straight sets before falling in the second round to earn second-team All-Ohio.

Williams was a sectional runner-up before taking sixth at districts to reach the state tournament in singles. Helle and teammate Smith were the sectional runners-up and sixth-place finishers at district in making the state tourney in doubles.

The All-Stark County first-team doubles selections are two sets of Jackson seniors — Grace Kargel and Laila Tadayon, and Avery O’Byrne and Laurel Balcom — along with the GlenOak duo of senior Olivia Wiles and junior Avery Swierz.

The Jackson doubles teams joined their other teammates in helping the Polar Bears win the Federal League Tournament team title and the overall league title. Tadayon and Kargel won the league title at No. 1 doubles and winning at No. 2 doubles were O’Byrne and Balcom.

Wiles and Swierz were district qualifiers together in doubles after placing fourth at sectionals.
