'Great' meeting in Alaska or just a photo-op? | Letter

I write to add my voice to those who are disgusted at the recent meeting in Alaska between the president of the United States, who has been convicted of multiple felonies, and the president of the Russian Federation, who has been indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court during its invasion of Ukraine, a sovereign nation.

The U.S. president ordered that a red carpet be rolled out for the Russian president as they stood together, smiling while shaking hands.

Prior to the meeting, the U.S. president had insisted that an immediate ceasefire was required for progress in ending this war. An elegant luncheon was canceled because the meeting lasted only a few hours with no announcement of Russian acceptance of a ceasefire.

I understand that the U.S. president used some of that time to insist that U.S. elections should allow only in-person voting. Maybe they also talked about the weather and the sale of Alaska to the U.S. in 1867. But we are led to understand that, as always with the U.S. president, it was a “great” meeting.

After years of fighting against brutal Russian aggression, the people of Ukraine are due so much more than photo-ops, red-carpet handshakes and empty promises.
