Giant Eagle offers free grocery delivery ahead of Winter Storm Fern

Everyone’s racing to get groceries ahead of Winter Storm Fern, so in an effort to help shoppers stock up, Giant Eagle is offering free grocery delivery through noon Saturday, Jan. 24.

The multi-state chain, with dozens of locations in Ohio, is telling customers to use the STAYWARM promo code in the Giant Eagle app on order over $35, as long as they are placed and scheduled for delivery by noon on Jan. 24.

It’s preorder free pick-up service will also continue, so you can stay toasty in your car while you wait for your groceries to come to you.

“Recognizing that additional days of frigid temperatures may force many to stay indoors this upcoming weekend, Giant Eagle is stepping up to ensure communities have access to the foods they need to feed themselves and their families,” the grocery chain said in a press release.

Well below freezing temps and plenty of snow in store

While central Ohio isn’t expected to face the largest brunt of the severe, incoming storm, the region, along with other parts of the state, is still under a winter storm warning. The warning begins at 10 a.m. Jan. 24 and is expected to remain in effect through Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

The forecast calls for heavy snow, with potential accumulation of 8 to 12 inches.

The weather service also issued a separate cold weather advisory that begins at 6 p.m. Jan. 23 until noon Jan. 24. Expect “very cold” wind chills as low as -12 degrees.

But even if you don’t feel like braving those crowded grocery store lines Friday, you probably should anyway, or take advantage of delivery and pick up if you can, according to emergency preparedness experts.

“As this weekend’s winter storm approaches, now is the time to prepare,” said Jeff Young, director for Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security (FCEMHS). “Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and purchase needed items before the storm begins to avoid hazardous travel conditions.”

However, Young noted that since the storm is expected to last only a few days, “large quantities of supplies won’t be necessary; however, being prepared will help keep you safe and comfortable.”

However, here’s what FCEMHS says you should have ready in any emergency supply kit:

You should also keep cell phones fully charged, have backup chargers or power banks available, and maintain “basic vehicle supplies” in case of an emergency.
