Former Ohio State basketball star signs 2-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks

Now that the NBA Playoffs are over, the free-agent signing frenzy has begun, and there are some former Ohio State basketball players looking to ink deals. On Tuesday, we saw Jae’Sean Tate ink a one-year deal with the Houston Rockets, but we also saw another former Buckeye hoops star lock in a contract as well.

Former star All-American guard D’Angelo Russell is on the move, having signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks. According to reports, the deal is worth $13 million and will help bolster a talented roster that already has the likes of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Anthony Davis, and No. 1 overall pick, former Duke forward Cooper Flagg.

Russell played for Ohio State just one season, but what a season it was during the 2014-15 season. He led the Big Ten in scoring and all freshmen in the country by averaging 19.3 points per contest. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2015 NBA draft and has had a ten-year career that’s seen him also in a Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves uniform. He was an All-Star in 2019.

With Irving out most likely early in the year, rehabbing from an ACL injury, Russell might be leaned on heavily to fill a scoring and ball-handling void. Here’s to hoping that he gets back to an All-Star form this season.
