FC Cincinnati (5-5-5) will return to MLS play for the first time since May 23 on Wednesday night, when it faces off against the Vancouver Whitecaps (10-2-2) at TQL Stadium.
Cincinnati, which entered the World Cup break with a 5-2 win over Orlando City SC, will face a tough challenge in Vancouver, a team that currently leads the Western Conference standings.
Between May 23 and Wednesday, FCC played two friendly matches: a 3-1 win over English club Burnley FC on July 10 and a 5-0 win over Honduran club C.D. Olimpia on July 15. However, both friendlies cannot be compared to league competition, as the club emptied its bench for significant portions of both games.
“It’s good to be back,” FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan said. “These guys have put a lot of work in, and I hope that comes out in the best way Wednesday.”

Ahead of the Vancouver match, Noonan said everyone on his team was healthy. Wednesday marks the return of center back Miles Robinson, back in MLS training after playing for the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Robinson, the first active FC Cincinnati player to make a World Cup roster, has not played for his club since May 16. He dealt with several injuries at the start of the 2026 MLS season, and emphasized the importance of a healthy back line as his team kicks off the second half of 2026.
“When we’re healthy, we’re always one of the best teams in the league,” Robinson said. “It’s just about getting some type of consistency while playing.”
Noonan said Robinson would need to be caught up on ideas and tactics the team developed while the defender was away. He noted that Robinson didn’t play in any World Cup games besides a group-stage match against Turkey, a situation that would be unique to manage from a fitness perspective.
Forward Kristian Fletcher, who joined Cincinnati ahead of the 2026 season but has not played due to an ACL tear, will likely be available for MLS play for the first time in a year. He was subbed on during the Burnley and Olimpia matches, scoring a penalty goal against the English squad.
Noonan declined to share specific plans regarding this year’s MLS transfer window, which opened on July 13, though he said it’d be quieter than previous transfer windows. As of Tuesday, the only transaction his team made was sending a 2026 International Roster Slot to the Chicago Fire in exchange for $350,000 in General Allocation Money.
“It’s not quieter because we’re not trying to improve the team,” Noonan said. “I think there are ways that we can do that, and that’s making sure with those potential additions that we get those few pieces right to to take our group to another level in the second half of the season.”

MLS All-Star midfielders Thomas Müller and Sebastian Berhalter headline the Whitecaps. Berhalter, son of former U.S. Men’s National Team coach Greg Berhalter, played on America’s 2026 World Cup roster with Robinson. Meanwhile, Müller is a soccer veteran, a former Bayern Munich star who played on Germany’s team that won the 2014 World Cup.
“He is a winner,” Noonan said of Müller. “He’s just so effective in how he moves and reads and anticipates play. He can score with his head. He can score with both feet. He can pass. I don’t know how many trophies he’s won, but he’s won a lot.”
Robison said he spoke briefly to Berhalter ahead of Wednesday and joked that he hopes to talk trash if FCC wins. Meanwhile, Noonan said he doesn’t know Berhalter but called him an excellent player.
Noonan praised Vancouver’s ability to make a variety of passes, including short ones and ones from distance. Despite this variation, he said its game is still very connected. The FCC coach also praised his opponent’s defensive intensity.
“One of the better teams in the league as far as how they step up their pressure and the intensity in which they do it,” Noonan said. “They recover very well when teams break them down or in transition moments.”
Vancouver is one of the most well-rounded teams in MLS, leading the league in goal differential (22). It is fourth for goals, and second for goals allowed.
Denkey wants to surpass Messi, Cuypers in golden boot race
FC Cincinnati starting striker Kévin Denkey said his goal for the 2026 season was to win the MLS golden boot, when asked about his personal goals.
“My goal is to be the top scorer at the end of the season,” Denkey said. “I need to score goals, starting from Wednesday.”
Currently, the Fire’s Hugo Cuypers leads the league in goals with 13, while Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi ranks second with 12 goals and eight assists. Evander is ranked 10th with nine goals and four assists, one spot behind his teammate Evander, who has nine goals and six assists.
Denkey estimated that it would take 25 goals to lead MLS in scoring. In 2025, he finished with 15 goals and two assists, while Messi won the golden boot with 29 himself.
