ALLIANCE ‒ A man and his grandson escaped a June 18 house fire at 541 Hester Ave. with minor injuries.
The cause remains under investigation with the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal and is considered an accident, according to Alliance Fire Department.
The homeowner heard crackles from a spare bedroom on the first floor of the two-story house and investigated the noise, said Inspector Chris Waffler of the Alliance Fire Department.
Waffler said the man opened the bedroom door and he was hit the face with heavy fire and smoke, sustaining burns on his head and singed hair.
Waffler said the man and his 18-year-old grandson, who was upstairs, fled with several pets. Both were treated at the scene and declined hospital care.
Waffler estimated the loss at $30,000. The house sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.
American Red Cross is assisting the family with immediate needs. Firefighters from Lexington Township and Sebring provided mutual aide.
