After more than two decades serving as a neighborhood staple, Edgar’s will close its doors for good this weekend, the restaurant announced in a message to the community.
The restaurant’s final day will be Saturday, April 4, marking the end of a 21-year run overlooking Good Park Golf Course.
Owned by chef Glenn Gillespie, Edgar’s has long been a fixture in Akron’s dining scene, known for its barbecue and seafood and its role as a community gathering place.
“After 21 incredible years, we share with full hearts that Edgar’s will be closing its doors after this weekend,” the owners wrote on Facebook. “Edgar’s has always been more than just a restaurant. It’s been a place where friendships were formed, celebrations were held, music was shared, and memories were made.”
Edgar’s built a loyal following in Akron’s dining scene. Its location on the golf course offered diners scenic views, while live music and community-focused events helped turn the restaurant into a gathering place for regulars and newcomers alike.
The restaurant also gained national attention in 2019 when it was featured on the Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible.” During that appearance, host Robert Irvine worked with staff to address operational challenges and refresh the business.
Despite such efforts and a strong base of support, the owners said the decision to close comes with gratitude rather than regret.
“To our staff – past and present – thank you for showing up, for believing in Edgar’s, and for returning time and time again to help create something truly special,” the post reads. “You are the heart of everything we built.”
The message also thanked customers who supported the restaurant over the years, many of whom became like family to the owners and staff.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact we’ve made in this community over the past 20 years, and we are beyond grateful to have been your neighborhood gathering place,” the owners wrote.
Rather than a quiet farewell, the team is inviting the community to celebrate one last time.
“This isn’t goodbye without celebration,” the post states. “Join us this weekend as we come together one last time to honor the memories, the music, the food, and the love that made Edgar’s what it is.”
The bar at Edgar’s, located at 530 Nome Avenue, will be open from 4 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The kitchen is open from 5 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. on both nights.
