Dover police officer removed from duty, faces criminal investigation

DOVER − The City of Dover will investigate whether disciplinary action or criminal charges are warranted following a Jan. 21 incident involving a Dover police officer, according to a statement issued by city officials.

Dover officials consider the allegations a serious matter, warranting a full investigation, according to the statement. The officer involved was immediately removed from duty and is on leave pending the results of an internal investigation.

The chief of police, city administration and law director are coordinating in conducting the investigation. The city has engaged an outside law enforcement agency to conduct an independent investigation. A special prosecutor has been appointed to to evaluate the results of that investigation and to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

The city is acting in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement with the FOP while it investigates this matter internally.

The officer will remain on leave pending the conclusion of the internal investigation, at which point disciplinary action may be imposed, the release stated. The separate and independent investigation regarding potential criminal violations will run concurrently with the city’s disciplinary process.

The City of Dover administration holds paramount the safety of the citizen of Dover and the integrity of the internal operations of its police department.
