DeWine says Buc-ee's should drop 'ridiculous' suit against Ohio store

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Buc-ee’s should drop its “ridiculous” lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Beavercreek.

The gas station giant sued Beaver’s Mini Mart on July 28 saying the small store’s logo is too similar to the beaver featured on Buc-ee’s stores across the nation.

DeWine said since the Dayton suburb is named Beavercreek, Buc-ee’s should not be surprised that businesses have beaver logos.

“They need to dismiss this lawsuit. This is ridiculous,” DeWine said during a visit to the Ohio State Fair on Aug. 5. “It is Beavercreek for heaven’s sake. You know. You expect to find in Beavercreek things named ‘beaver.’”

DeWine said he looked at the cartoon from Beaver’s Mini Mart, which has been in business for more than 20 years, which features a standing beaver and said he doesn’t see a similarity between the store’s mascot and Buc-ee’s beaver logo.

Beaver’s Mini Mart doesn’t even sell gas and is about a 20-minute drive from the new Buc-ee’s off of Interstate 70 in Huber Heights, which is currently the only location in the state.

DeWine, who was at the giant gas station’s grand opening in April, said people in Ohio “love Buc-ee’s” and he welcomes them to the state. But the lawsuit is not helping the company’s image.

“All they are doing is creating ill will,” DeWine said.
