Delaware farmer's market to close roads, moves into street for more space

The downtown Delaware farmers’ market is spilling into the street.

Main Street Delaware, Inc., posted on Facebook on May 6 that Sandusky Street will be closed between William Street and Winter Street for the market on Saturday mornings and that vendors will be able to set up directly in the roadway.

The downtown Delaware market runs from 9 a.m. to noon starting May 23, and will be every Saturday through Oct. 31.

The organization said it has coordinated the plan with the City of Delaware and the Delaware Police Department “in order to create a safer, more spacious experience for everyone who comes downtown.”

Main Street Delaware said keeping the market downtown is important.

“As an organization dedicated to strengthening the historic downtown district, this move allows us to continue growing the market while creating the vibrant, walkable community experience that makes downtown Delaware so special,” according to the social media post.

The majority of comments online supported the location change, but there were some skeptics as well. The owner of the Hamburger Inn Diner wrote that their regular Saturday morning customers won’t be able to come to the restaurant during the market season because “some of them cannot walk the 2 blocks they may face.”

The market includes local produce as well as other products such as handmade goods, flowers, meat and eggs.
