Dayspring residents were treated to a picnic June 4 outside their Dayspring home on Olivesburg Road.
Local trade unions International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 688, Laborers Local 1216 and Carpenters Local 735 members sponsored the event and brought all the fixings, including burgers and hot dogs from Pinhook Meats in Lucas and side salads, chips and soda from Kroger. Then, they served it to residents, some of whom loved it so much they asked for seconds.
Union representatives Hank Webb, Al Garverick, Brian McPeek II, Robert Kasper and Luke Clark grilled dozens of burgers and hot dogs to the delight of Dayspring residents.
Executive Director Michelle Swank thanked residents for coming outside to the pavilion to enjoy the food and fun.
She thanked the guests for thinking of residents and providing such a wonderful picnic.
“I want to thank the carpenters and the laborers and the electrical workers. And I want to thank Doc Stumbo for doing his ‘normal’ and making sure Dayspring is not forgotten,” she said. “We are so grateful for you guys for not only providing all the food, but cooking all the food and thinking of us and making us a part of your lives.”
Stumbo, for numerous years with Graham Auto Mall, provided a Christmas party for residents as students from Sherman Elementary School sang and visited with them.
Monk Mullins, a Vietnam veteran, said the food was outstanding. He has lived at Dayspring for 19 years and was happy to have a large cheeseburger for lunch.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” he said. “I think this is fabulous.”
Mullins, a massive record collector, kept visitors entertained with his knowledge and good memory of music trivia, including songs by Kansas.
“I like it here,” he said.
The union members said they plan to come out more often and do some other projects for the residents.
Tony Lugo of Shelby, who has lived at Dayspring only about three months, offered up some witty jokes.
Local members of the trade unions grilled for an hour at the pavilion outside Dayspring.
Residents applauded the grill masters for their lunch.
Dayspring Assisted Living and Care Facility provides a home for county residents who cannot live independently and need assistance with their daily needs, and also provides a safe haven for those who do not qualify for nursing homes or are not wealthy enough to afford private care assisted living.
