Headlines in History 1962: Prestige car line to move on Monday

June 7, 1905: “An oriole looking for protection from the cold wave which struck South Bend last night, took refuge in the globe of the electric lamp at the corner of North Michigan street and LaSalle avenue. Unable to escape, the bird pecked a hold through the globe, but still being held a prisoner it attracted the attention of a man named Shepperd and he climbed the pole, dropped the lamp to the street and allowed others to release the captive bird.”

June 8, 1910: “Informing inquisitive people whom he met that he was going to New York, Davis Romine, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Romine, North Allen street, wandered away from home to-day. He reached the union interurban station, Michigan street and Washington avenue, before located by friends of his parents. The child had ridden down town on a street car and was waiting anxiously on the corner for a car on which he could continue his journey when found. He was taken home.”

June 9, 1920: “Numerous inquiries have been coming to the health department relative to removal of outhouses in compliance with the ordinance of Dec. 10, 1917. The ordinance divided the city into five zones and attempted to rid the city of outhouses by 1922. The third zone falls under the ordinance on July 1, 1920, and includes virtually 600 outhouses which will have to be removed unless the owners are willing to pay a heavy fine.”

June 10, 1933: “Children in Orphans’ home at Mishawaka were given a treat Friday afternoon by the Frances Willard union of W. C. T. U. Rev. E. F. Roesti, of Grace Evangelical church, gave an illustrated Biblical talk and Betty Whitmer appeared in a piano solo. Two harmonica solos and a song were given by the orphans.”

June 11, 1945: “Births exceeded deaths by 158 in South Bend last month, the city health department revealed today in reporting the totals as 244 and 86. Of the deaths 37 were attributed to heart ailments, 11 to cancer and 10 to pneumonia. Two were attributed to suicide and two to accidents. One hundred thirty of the children born in the month were girls.”

June 12, 1952: “A cake burning in the oven sent firemen to the home of Clem Schwartz, 422 South Sheridan avenue, at 2:48 p. m. Wednesday. Companies Nos. 8 and 12, pump No. 21 and truck No. 2 answered the telephone alarm. Damage was confined to the cake.”

June 13, 1962: “The Studebaker Corp. will begin turning out 1963 Larks and Hawks in late August with stepped – up production and the addition of several hundred employees, Sherwood H. Egbert, president, said today.He also announced that assembly operations would begin Monday on the company’s new prestige car, the Avanti, and that Studebaker expects to be producing 1,000 a month by the end of August, twice the previously anticipated rate.”
