Crestview wins FC wrestling title; OCC crown goes to Ashland

OLIVESBURG — The host Crestview Cougars rewarded first-year wrestling coach Trent Hovis with something they last won in 2021 – a Firelands Conference championship.

Behind two weight class champs and three other finalists, the Cougars scored 146.5 points to hold off runner-up Western Reserve by 4.5 points.

Winning titles for Crestview were Jack Stephens (175 pounds) and Bronson Rose (215). Stephens beat New London’s Hunter Chandley 11-2 and Rose topped South Central’s Alex Hamons 6-1.

Runners-up for the Cougars were Dylan Burge (126), Max Whitesel (132) and Brayden Parrigan (138).

Sean Nolen (106), Kenneth McGregor (113), Louscius Whitesel (157) and Drake Foster (190) were all third for Crestview, while Jayce Hinton (120), Terrance Bently (144) and Josiah Freewalt (285) contributed to the championship run with fourth-place finishes.

Winning the 144 title for Plymouth was Ben Trimmer. He nipped Western Reserve’s Landon Barhart 4-3.  Levi Foley (106) and Isaiah Miller (190) were runners-up for the Big Red.

Ashland wrestlers 3-peat in OCC

Led by three-time champs Mason Bauer (138) and Guardian Miller (150), the Ashland Arrows won a third consecutive Ohio Cardinal Conference wrestling title at home on Saturday.

Winning the heavyweight title for the third time was Madison’s Jaxin Stancombe.

In all, the tournament saw eight repeat champs, with area wrestlers winning 10 of the 14 weight classes.

Champs for the Arrows included Tyson Mateo (106), Kale Durig (113), Max Ohl (120), Nick Manges (144), Talon Boyd (175) and Drayston Martin (215). Ohl, Boyd and Martin were repeat winners.

Aiden Proctor (165) was a repeat champ for Madison.

215: 3. Gage Cyrus, Madison

285: 3. Nate Taylor, Lexington; 4. Skyler Radeff, Ashland
