The Crew (8-3-7) defeated the top team in the Western Conference, the Vancouver Whitecaps (10-2-5), 2-1 at Lower.com Field on June 14.
The victory marks the first for the Crew since May 3, when they defeated Charlotte FC 4-2.
Forward Ibrahim Aliyu got the ball rolling quickly for Columbus, scoring the second-fastest regular-season goal in club history 1:08 into the game.
The Whitecaps responded to Aliyu’s goal 5 minutes later. Forward Daniel Rios sent a strike from the top of Columbus’ box, and midfielder Jean Claude Ngando was credited with the goal.
At the 23-minute mark, forward Diego Rossi broke the tie with a goal off a pass from forward Daniel Gazdag. This marks Gazdag’s first scoring contribution since joining the Crew on April 11.
Three times in the second half, it looked like the Crew had extended that lead as the ball found the back of the net, but each goal was called back due to offside calls.
Already coming off a two-week break to face the Whitecaps, Columbus now has another week off and will return to action on June 25 against Atlanta United at Lower.com Field.

After forward Ibrahim Aliyu went down on the right side of the field with a lower-body injury, midfielder Tristan Brown entered the game to replace Aliyu.
Aliyu was able to leave the field without help from medical staff.

Defender Andres Herrera looked to have secured the Crew’s third goal against the Whitecaps when he found the back of the net on a one-on-one play with goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka inside the box, but Herrera was charged with an offside call prior to receiving the ball.
The play marked the third time the Crew’s third goal was overturned due to offside.

After a VAR review of the goal, it was determined by officials that midfielder Mo Farsi was offside before receiving the ball, putting the Crew’s lead back to 2-1.

The Crew were awarded a free-kick opportunity right outside Vancouver’s box when defender Andres Herrera was fouled by midfielder Jean Claude Ngando.
Forward Diego Rossi executed the kick and sent a pass to forward Ibrahim Aliyu on the left side of the box, but Aliyu was unable to create any forward movement before getting the ball taken away from the Whitecaps’ defense.

From the center of Vancouver’s box, forward Ibrahim Aliyu found the back of the net to give the Crew an early advantage over the Whitecaps.
Midfielder Lassi Lappalainen was in control of the ball near the right corner of Vancouver’s goal when he found Aliyu on the run, and sent the pass setting up Aliyu’s one-touch goal.
