Columbus police responded at around 3:23 a.m. Sept. 10 to the Medeks’ home in the 5500 block of Englecrest Drive on the city’s Southeast Side. Officers found Michaela critically injured and suffering from blunt force trauma injuries to her head police said.

Michaela was transported to OhioHealth Pickerington Hospital in Fairfield County, where she was pronounced dead on Sept. 14, according to the media release. Her death was later ruled a homicide by the Fairfield County Coroner’s Office.

According to a criminal complaint filed by city homicide detectives, Austen told Columbus police that Michaela had somehow fallen and was unconscious.

An autopsy of Michaela revealed that the injuries she sustained were not consistent with a fall, according to the criminal complaint. Over the course of the investigation, Austen was identified as a suspect through physical evidence and witness statements, police said.

Medek was arrested Dec. 15 without incident by a Columbus police SWAT team. He is currently in custody at the Franklin County jail.
