Columbus City Council is partnering with the Gateway Film Center and three other community organizations to offer free movies and extended cooling relief centers as the National Weather Service has extended its extreme heat advisory until 8 p.m. Friday, June 27.
The Gateway Film Center and City Council will be offering free tickets for select movie showings June 26-27 — and popcorn and soda are included.
In addition to keeping the city’s cooling centers open, the council is helping to keep three nonprofit cooling centers open on June 26 and 27 on extended hours:
∎ United Methodist Church and Community Development for All People (CD4AP), 946 Parsons Ave. on the city’s South Side, will continue their extended hours until 10 p.m. to help residents beat the heat. They will also provide dinner.
∎ 3rd Shift Warming and Cooling Center, 1015 E. Main St., in Olde Towne East, will be open by the council as an overnight cooling relief center from 9:30 pm. until 6 a.m.
∎ First Step Recovery Center, 813 Bryden Road, Olde Towne East, will be openby the council from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
“Providing these supports saves lives,” Councilmember Christopher L. Wyche, who led the effort, said in a prepared release. “We are grateful to our corporate, nonprofit, and departmental partners that were willing to step up to meet the needs of the community.”
