PHILADELPHIA − Chase Burns was set to embark on a very different experience in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game compared to Cincinnati Reds teammate, Sal Stewart. Burns was still determined to enjoy it in his own way.
A few hours before first pitch, Stewart said he didn’t know exactly when he’d play in the game, but he at least knew he was available. Burns couldn’t say the same after opting out of participating, instead prioritizing the second half of the season rather than risking aggravating a tight groin.
Still, Burns’ excitement wasn’t lessened by the fact that he wouldn’t play, although he conceded it was tough to have finally arrived in the hours leading up to the Midsummer Classic and knowing for sure he wouldn’t play.
“Still through the roof even though I’m not able to play in the game,” Burns said. “I’m still thankful to be here and be here with Sal, and represent the Reds.”
There wasn’t a bad spot In the National League clubhouse, but Burns’ locker was situated between two players he’d definitely consider desirable: Stewart to his right and Philadelphia Phillies ace and NL starter, Cristopher Sanchez.
For the first time in Burns’ eyes, Sanchez became more than an opposition pitcher.
“He’s been awesome. He’s been cool,” Burns said. “He’s had his kids running around and he’s a monster. I didn’t realize how big he was.”
Burns had some loosely-defined objectives coming into the All-Star Game, including picking the minds of his pitching peers and attempting to meet Justin Verlander, who announced he’d retire at the end of this season and was then named as an honorary member of the American League All-Star roster.
Additionally, Burns had one of the best seats in the house during the previous night’s Home Run Derby thriller, and he walked the All-Star Game Red Carpet at Philadelphia’s Independence Mall before being transported to Citizens Bank Park for the game.
Along the way, Burns found a few quiet moments that weren’t recorded by influencers and reporters.
With first pitch finally fast-approaching, Burns seemed to shift his focus toward enjoying himself as he saw fit: By immersing himself in the contest.
“I think I’m just gonna use this time to really enjoy myself,” Burns said. “Really take a deep breath and be where my feet are at… I really just want to take it all in and watch some good baseball.
“God has put me in this opportunity. I’m just going to take all of it in.”
