WASHINGTON – Cincinnati Reds rookie Chase Burns made another run at franchise history July 22 in Washington, striking out nine Nationals batters before he reached the fifth inning.
That put him third on the Reds’ all-time list for career strikeouts through five starts, with two innings left in his outing.

He added a sixth-inning strikeout of Daylen Lile on his 94th pitch of the night for his second 10K start in a row – setting a franchise record by becoming the first Reds pitcher to have two double-digit strikeout games in his first five games.
Burns is the 14th big-league pitcher with two 10K games in his first five, joining a list that last added a name in 2018 (Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta).
But he lasted just one more batter (who laced a two-run single to right) and departed, trailing 6-1 with two out in the sixth.
