CANTON – Council has unanimously approved two large-scale water and sewer projects.
One, slated for the Mount Vernon Area, is projected to cost an estimated $3.75 million. The city’s goal is to replace over two miles of failing water mains, 400 feet of sanitary sewer and respective manholes.
The city will begin accepting bids for the project late 2026, Service Director John Highman has said.
The engineering department will resurface roadways within project limits, defined as the area north of 29th Street NW, south of 34th Street NW, east of Interstate 77 and west of Cleveland Avenue NW.
The water department has secured $1.5 million from the Ohio Public Works Commission for the project, with a $600,000 grant and a $900,000 zero interest, ten-year loan. The rest of the funds will come from the water department’s 2027 budgeted funds. The engineering department will allocate funds for the sanitary line and roadway improvements.
The second project, also a water main replacement, will impact the Croydon Drive NW and Brookpark Circle NW area in Plain Township near Arboretum Park.
The city will replace 1.8 miles of water mains in the area defined as:
Croydon Drive: area north of Fulton Avenue NW, south of Sussex Street NW, east of Westmoreland Avenue NW. Brookpark Circle: north of Parkhill Circle NW, south of 38th Street NW, east of Overhill Drive NW and west of Westmoreland Avenue NW.
The current estimated cost of the project is $2.7 million. The Water Department has secured $1.5 million for the project from the Ohio Public Works Commission. $750,000 being a grant and the other half a zero percent interest loan.
According to a communication from Highman, project plans and specifications are complete and the city is ready to proceed with bidding construction contracts.
