Caldwell softball stays perfect at 5-0 with doubleheader sweep, Top Performers, March 30-April 4

CALDWELL − Host Caldwell High kept rolling by picking up a clean sweep in doubleheader action with visiting Warren by scores of 4-0 in game one, followed by a 16-6 romp in the nightcap to stay unbeaten at 5-0 on Saturday, March 4.

Senior ace Makayla Mumaw turned in another dominating effort from the pitcher’s circle in game one, allowing just three hits with 11 Ks to improve her season mark to 5-0.

Cecelia Marshall paced the CHS first game offense with a home run wit a pair of RBIs.

Kali Astorga collected her first varsity pitching win in the game two romp, finishing with three strikeouts. Junior Breighlee Moracco paced the Caldwell attack by belting a pair of home runs with four RBIs, while Sophia Marshall banged out three hits.

Mumaw cranked out a home run with four RBIs, Cecelia belted her second home run of the day, collecting with three RBIs and Cami Arick also went deep for a home run.

Friday, April 3 Results

BASEBALL

Barnesville 9, St. Clairsville 0: Dylan Blon .collected his 16th varsity pitching win with a complete game outing versus the Red Devils for the ‘Rocks who improve to 3-1 on the season.

Blon finished with seven strikeouts to set the new career pitching wins mark, passing Jaxon Wiley, a 2024 Barnesville graduate.

Max Miller paced the Barnesville offense with a 2-3 night with a pair of base hits with an RBI, while Jack Anderson doubled, singled with an RBI. Blake Burkhart added a double with two RBIs, Blon contributed a triple and Parker Sobutka chipped in with an RBI base hit.

Cambridge 6, Union Local 5: The Bobcats needed a full game effort for the first time this season, and they were up to the task by breaking a 5-5 deadlock with senior Mason Gregg ripping a double to plate the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to improve to 4-0 on the season.

After winning by “mercy rule” in its first three games of the season, the Bobcats needed almost a full seven innings to hold off the visiting Jets on Friday, March 3 at Don Coss Field at Ron Antill Stadium at the Cambridge City Park.

The Bobcats didn’t need the entire seven innings as they scored the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk off win.

Garrett Carpenter was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second to move into scoring position. After a pop out, Gregg stepped to the plate and lined a double to the gap in the right-center field to drive Carpenter home with the game-winning run.

In the game, Tate Sikora and Javon Lowery each had two hits with Gregg and Garrett Carpenter each getting a hit, Gregg’s the game-winning double.

Gregg pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up just two earned runs. He struck out three and walked two. Carpenter picked up the win in relief, striking out four and walking none.

SOFTBALL

Union Local 8, 11 Cambridge 2,1: The Bobcats softball team dropped a pair of games to Union Local on Friday, March 3 as the Lady Jets beat the Bobcats 8-2 in the opener and 11-1 in the night camp.

Playing a doubleheader to make up a previously rained out game, the Bobcats could never get the offense going scoring only three runs in the two-game set.

In the first game, Cambridge fell behind 2-0 early and cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Three consecutive two-out singles by Kerry Sarchett, Talyor Warden, and Cami Moore pushed across the Cats’ first run of the day.

Despite only scoring two runs, the Bobcats had nine hits in the game including three by Moore. Laney Harper suffered the loss in the circle giving up five earned runs, 10 hits, and a pair of walks to go with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, Union Local capitalized on an eight-run fifth inning to get the big win. In the pivotal inning, the Jets walloped a pair of home runs and a pair of doubles.

Danika Troyer had the only hit for the Bobcats (5-5), a single in the third inning that loaded the bases with two outs before another strikeout derailed the rally.

Thursday, April 2 Results

SOFTBALL

Cambridge 6, Bellaire 3: The Bobcats softball team completed a home-and-home Buckeye 8 Conference sweep over the Big Reds on Thursday, April 2 at the Cambridge City Park.

Cambridge (5-3) put the game away with a huge four-run fifth inning. Senior Laney Harper picked up an RBI with a line drive single to centerfield. And Chelsey Wells collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Harper went the distance from the pitching circle to collect the win for the Lady Cats, striking out seven, walking two and giving up only two hits.

John Glenn 6, Meadowbrook 1: Sophomore Kendall Snider struck out 10 and yielded four hits in a complete game for the Muskies (6-0) in an MVL crossover win at home.

Snider, who walked five, yielded a triple and single to No. 9 hitter Addie Schultice and a double to Kim Munch in the No. 8 spot. Hitters 1-7 combined to go 1-for-19 with eight strikeouts.

Addison Babcock and Kinley Porter had two-run doubles for John Glenn, which scored four times in the third inning.

Senior Addy Sichina, who struck out four, allowed three earned runs in a complete game for the Colts (2-2).

BASEBALL

Cambridge 15, Bellaire 2: The Bobcats baseball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with its third “Mercy Rule” of the season. The Bobcats completed a home-and-home Buckeye 8 sweep over the Big Reds with a 15-2 win at Don Coss Field at Ron Antill Stadium at Cambridge City Park.

Cambridge jumped on the Big Reds early scoring 10 runs in the first inning, sending 15 batters to the plate getting six hits including three doubles – two by senior Dawson Geese.

Cambridge added five runs on four hits in the second inning including a two-RBI double by senior Mason Gregg.

Brody Latham struck out four, gave up three this and two runs to earn the win on the mound for the Bobcats.

Senior Garrett Carpenter had three hits including a double and scored three runs. Javon Lowery, Gregg, Geese, and Cam Lauer all had two hits with Lauer, Gregg and Geese all slugging doubles.

BOYS TENNIS

Cambridge 5, Steubenville 0: The Bobcats tennis team shut out Steubenville to move to 2-1 on the season in road action on Thursday, April 2.

Jacob Vincent beat Monte Guntrum at first singles 6-0, 6-1. Ezekiel Bergeson won a marathon match at second singles defeating Leo Kogler 7-6 (5), 7-5 in 2 1/2 hours.

Loukas Laughman picked up his first varsity win beating Paul Bosby 6-1, 6-2 at third singles. Cambridge’s first doubles team of Silas Hutchison and Quentin Stora won 6-1, 6-4 over Zach McClurg and Coen Rosnak. At second doubles, Tyler Oliver and Austin Krise whipped Grady Moran and Brayden Kittle 6-0, 6-0.

Tuesday, March 31 Results

TRACK

Bobcats’ track teams sweep tri-meet: The Cambridge High School girls’ and boys’ track teams both won a tri-meet over Meadowbrook and Shenandoah on Tuesday at the Cambridge High School track. The Cambridge girls scored 71.5 points to out-distance Meadowbrook with 64.5 and Shenandoah. The boys scored 67 to outpoint the Colts with 53.5 and the Zeps.

Leading the Lady Bobcats was Jaylee Theodosopoulos who won the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Theodosopoulos ran the100 in 13.32 and crossed the line in the 200 in 27.55. Teammate Paisley Williams took third in the 100.

Paisley Williams captured the pole vault with a vault of 11 feet. Bailey Anderson won the discus with a personal best throw of 117-11.

In the relay races, Cambridge swept 4×200, taking first, second and third. The team of Kalynn Douglas, Emma Cowgill, Dahlia MenaRamos, and Johnston won the race with a time of 1:56.73. Alania Sigman, Summer Callahan, Madelyn Phillips, and Skye Craft won the 4×800 meter relay in 12:45.21.

In boys’ action, Brayden Biddle, Bryce Hickman, Brody Forshey and Damien Kissinger all picked up wins in their individual events and the Bobcats won all four relays.

Biddle ran a 2:11.81 to win the 800-meter run. Hickman won the discus with a throw of 118-03. Forshey cleared a personal best 10-6 in the pole vault and Kissinger leaped a personal best 20-03.75 in the long jump.

In the relay races, Damien Shaw, Kissinger, Blaize Barlow and Brayden Morris won the 4×100-meter relay in 48.14, while Kissinger, Tolbert, Lawrence, and Walker won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:37.67. In the 4×400-meter relay, Biddle, Tolbert, Walker, and Lawrence won the race in 3:41.00. The Bobcats’ 4×800-meter relay team of Dawson Spratt, Parker Hatfield, Easton Conlon, and Sam Seckel won the race in 11:14.80.

BASEBALL

Cambridge 11, Meadowbrook 1: The Bobcats baseball team capitalized on a second consecutive strong pitching effort to pick up second straight win over the Guernsey County rival Colts to open the season with a 2-0 record.

Senior Garrett Carpenter followed up Dawson Geese’s no-hitter on Monday night with a 1-run, 2-hit performance with five Ks, walked none and induced six ground ball outs. The only Meadowbrook run was unearned with Carpenter only throwing 51 pitches in the game.

The Bobcats took advantage of four errors, two walks and a hit batter to score four runs. Tate Sikora led the Bobcats with two hits, two RBIs, and a run. Senior Mason Gregg ripped a double, with two RBIs, and scored two runs and Javan Lowery added an RBI single.

Caldwell 3, Wheeling Central 2: Host Caldwell pushed a run across in the bottom of the eighth to slip past the Maroon Knights to improve to 2-0 in baseball action Tuesday, March 31.

Kyler Starr hurled a solid complete game 4-hitter for CHS to collect the win on the mound.

Cameron Sidwell turned in a 2-3 day offensively with a pair of doubles, with Jacob Laswell and Lucas Baker each contributed RBI base hits.

Barnesville 5, St. Clairsville 4: The ‘Rocks broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of run in the top of the sixth inning to slip past the Red Devils in varsity baseball action on Tuesday, March 31.

Leading Barnesville’s nine hit attack was Blake Burkhart with a 2-3 night with an RBI, Aidan Caldwell added a 2-4 effort with two RBIs. Braylon Lucas and Jack Anderson each banged out two singles, while Brayden Watters added a base hit that plated a pair of RBIs.

Keegan Martin worked three-plus innings with two Ks and no walks to earn the win on the mound for the Shamrocks.

SOFTBALL

Cambridge 7, Marietta 4: The Bobcats softball team moved above the .500 mark at 4-3 with the victory over the visiting Tigers in action at Cambridge City Park on Tuesday, March 31.

The Cambridge High School softball team defeated Marietta 7-4 in softball action on Tuesday at Cambridge City Park.

The Tigers and the Bobcats entered the third inning tied at 1-1 when Cambridge exploded for four runs to take the 5-1 lead and maintained the upper hand the rest of the way for the victory.

Senior Miranda Cole and Haley Perkins led the Lady Cats with a pair of hits each having a double and Cole adding a solo home run.

Kynlee Moran picked up the win in the circle for CHS, finishing with 12 strikeouts, three walks, scattering eight hits and surrendered only three earned runs.

John Glenn 9, Tri-Valley 2: The Muskies scored six times in the first three innings as Estelle Matheney and Ava Miller had three hits each in an MVL-Big School win in Dresden.

Cora Dever doubled with two singles and three RBIs and Morgan Harper slugged a two-run homer to pace John Glenn, which had 13 hits and drew four walks. Delaney Bell struck out six in six innings to earn the win.

West M 8, Meadowbrook 7: Fraylee Williams scored the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Tornaodoes got a key MVL-Small School win in Falls Township.

Williams also pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to get the win. Gabbi Hammer had two doubles and Kyanna Bowers a double and for West, which led 6-1 after two innings. Calie Smith also doubled.

BOYS TENNIS

Cambridge 3, St. Clairsville 2: The Bobcats (1-1) boys tennis team picked up its first win of the season with the win over the Red Devils in Buckeye 8 action on Tuesday, March 31 at the Cambridge City Park.

St. Clairsville, with only four players participating on Tuesday, forfeited the three singles matches and played both double’s matches.

The Red Devil’s first doubles team of Caiden Straub and Mavrik Malin beat Jacob Vincent and Silas Hutchison, 3-6, 3-6. Their second doubles team of Donovan Holder and Cohen Snyder beat Cambridge’s Ezekiel Bergeson and Quentin Stora, 4-6, 3-6.

Monday, March 30 Results

SOFTBALL

Cambridge 8, Bellaire 7: The Bobcats softball team slipped past the host Big Reds in Buckeye 8 action on Monday, March 30 to reach the .500 mark at 3-3.

Cambridge rallied from a 5-run deficit and held off the Big Reds in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the road victory.

Laney Harper finished with a huge night to lead the Bobcats’ effort, from the pitchers circle she scattered seven hits and surrendered only two earned runs with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn the win.

Offensively, Harper also led the hit parade with four hits and three RBIs including a double. Miranda Cole added three hits, scored four runs, and drove in two runs. Alaceia Smith picked up a pair of RBIs on her lone hit.

Meadowbrook 2, West M 1: Natalee Norman scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning in the Colts’ MVL-Small School conquest.

Addy Sichina struck out six in a four-hitter to get the win. The Colts had only three hits — all singles. McKendall Boyer, drove in the game’s first run in the third inning with a base hit. Addie Schultice, Natalee Norman and Chole Callahan collected the other singles for the winners.

Fraylee Williams tossed six innings to take the loss. Kyana Bowers singled home a run in the fourth to tie the game to lead the West offense.

John Glenn 4, Tri-Valley 0: Kendall Snider struck out 18 in a one-hitter and hit a solo homer for the Muskies, who stayed unbeaten with an MVL-Big School shutout.

Addison Babcock added a double and two singles as Tri-Valley scored all of its runs in the first two innings. Ava Miller had a two-run single.

Gracie Hutton pitched 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Gerran Matthews’ single accounted for the Scotties’ only offense.

BASEBALL

Cambridge 11, Bellaire 0: Senior Dawson Geese enjoyed an impressive season debut from the mound by tossing a five-inning no-hitter to lead the Bobcats to a season opening Buckeye 8 Conference road win on Monday, March 30.

Geese pitched a near-perfect game giving up no hits and no runs while striking out 12 batters. The only blemishes on his game were a pair of hit batters; one eliminated trying to steal second base and one stranded.

Geese also provided some offense with a triple, a double and two RBIs in the game, with senior Mason Gregg singled twice with two RBIs. Senior Garrett Carpenter stroked an RBI double, Tate Sikora added an RBI infield hit and Javon Lowery collected a pair of RBIs.

Barnesville 3, Union Local 2: Parker Sobutka enjoyed a big night to lead the Shamrocks past the Jets in varsity baseball action on Monday, March 30.

Sobutka turned in a solid relief effort with three Ks without issuing a free pass to earn the win on the mound.

Sobutka also paced the Barnesville offense with collecting the game winning hit after ripping a clutch double and single for a pair of hits, with Max Miller adding a base hit.
