After the Cleveland Browns made the blockbuster trade that sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams for draft compensation and young defensive star Jared Verse, there was speculation it would be the start of a fire sale. Of course, that meant the next feasible player to get traded would be veteran Denzel Ward, one of the best at his position, who likely would’ve gotten some more draft picks for the future.
But ahead of training camp, that speculation was put to rest on Tuesday as Cleveland came to an agreement with Ward on a contract extension. The new deal is a two-year extension worth a maximum of $62.2 million, which will make him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
The new two-year extension for Ward includes $52.3 million in guaranteed money, so while the Browns aim to get younger, they are making sure to keep one of their franchise cornerstones on the defensive side of the ball into the future.
