Brendan Sorsby has only one way to play football after CFL rejection

Former Cincinnati Bearcat quarterback Brendan Sorsby won’t be playing for Texas Tech this season, he won’t be taken in an NFL supplemental draft and now he won’t be playing north of the border in the Canadian Football League.

“Upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring fair competition are paramount to the CFL. The allegations involving Brendan Sorsby are serious and concerning,” the league said in a statement shared to USA TODAY.

“At this time, the CFL will not register a contract for him, and no team will be permitted to add him to its negotiation list.”

The CFL had its draft in April and began its season earlier in June, but Sorsby as an undrafted player would normally be eligible to sign with a team. The CFL’s statement said Sorsby would not be permitted to be placed on a team’s “negotiation list,” which would have given a team the rights to sign him.

Sorsby’s options to play football in 2026 are now limited to junior college football, which is the path former Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers – who was banned in 2023 after gambling on Cyclones sports, including football as a backup quarterback, and played at Iowa Western Community College in 2024 – took. Dekkers is now in his second stint with the New Orleans Saints ahead of training camp and just completed the spring season with the UFL’s Houston Gamblers. Dekkers was undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft.
