There are some interesting details emerging around the cornerback battle at Cincinnati Bengals training camp.
As expected, Dax Hill and DJ Turner are the primary starters on the boundary. Jalen Davis continues to get the expected big looks in the slot, too.
Things get a little messier, or at least unexpected, when the second-team comes in, though.
There, a notable is Josh Newton continuing to struggle with seeing the field, a point raised by Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic recently.
“Instead, DJ Ivey and Tacario Davis outside and Ja’Sir Taylor in the slot have taken nearly all the second-team reps,” Dehner wrote. “Josh Newton remains in the same doghouse that kept his snaps limited down the stretch last season.”
So, of note is rookie Tacario Davis already getting some primary backup reps on the boundary. Free-agent signing Ja’Sir Taylor is, if nothing else, securing a backup role.
That leaves Newton behind Taylor despite his having more experience with the team. A fifth-rounder in 2024 with some apparent upside, Newton played 504 snaps as a rookie and saw that dip to 275 in 2025.
There’s still plenty of time for Newton to turn things around in camp and the preseason. But he’s trending toward cut candidate status as the competition at corner continues to add new names by the offseason.
