An Ohio city council will vote in an upcoming meeting on a resolution affirming the beaver as the community’s historic symbol.
The council will meet Monday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. to vote on the resolution that recognizes the more than two centuries the beaver has been a hallmark of the community’s identity, according to a news release on the city of Beavercreek’s website.
This resolution comes after Texas-based Buc-ee’s filed a lawsuit against Beaver’s Mini Mart in Beavercreek, claiming that the corner store’s logo could be confused with its own big-toothed rodent logo. The lawsuit sparked an outpouring of support from the community in the form of business representatives changing their logos to include beavers.
“For the citizens of Beavercreek, the beaver is not just a corporate marketing device,” the resolution states. “It is a recognized representation of the city’s identity, history, and values, held in common by generations of residents.”
If approved, the release states the resolution will formally express city council’s support for local schools, athletic programs, youth organizations, community groups and locally owned businesses that use the city of Beavercreek’s name and beaver imagery as symbols of the community. The resolution recognizes these organizations and businesses as important pieces of the city’s economy, character and civic pride.
“The community is all banding together in support of our community mascot, the beaver. I thought it was important that our council also communicates that and shows our support,” said Beavercreek Vice Mayor Zach Upton.
Early European hunters and settlers named Big Beaver Creek and Little Beaver Creek after the abundant native beaver population that inhabited the region, the release said, establishing the community’s connection to the amphibious rodent to the community’s founding in 1803.
The city council meeting will take place at Beavercreek City Hall at 1368 Research Park Drive.
