Just five starts since returning from the injured list (IL), Cincinnati Reds All-Star starting pitcher Hunter Greene returned to the IL on Aug. 5 because of soreness in his surgically repaired right elbow.
Whether that explains his up-and-down results since returning July 4 from March surgery to remove bone chips, the Reds for now say they have no timetable for his return until after Greene travels to Los Angeles to get a second examination and evaluation from orthopedist Neal ElAttrache.
Team president Nick Krall said Greene reported experiencing soreness during a between-starts bullpen session Tuesday and underwent an MRI in Cincinnati the next morning. Krall declined to reveal the initial results of that scan.
“I’m not going to get into that until we have the other doctor’s opinion on that,” Krall said.
This is the seventh time in five big-league seasons that Greene has spent time on the injured list. He has not completed a full season without at least one trip to the IL, turning in a career high of 26 starts in 2024, the year he earned an All-Star selection.
The Reds’ two-time Opening Day starter is 2-2 with a 6.83 in five starts this season with quality starts in his second and third starts back, including seven scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs on July 10 (12 strikeouts, one walk).
He gave up four runs in six innings in his most recent start, July 31 against the Pirates, in a performance that was better than the final numbers, with two runs having scored in the first inning after a pair of mistakes – including Greene’s failure to cover first base quickly enough on a grounder to first for what would have been the third out. Both runs scored after that.
