At least 5 tornadoes confirmed in NKY, Ohio and Indiana after storms

Some Greater Cincinnati residents assumed the recent thunderstorm in the area was too severe to have been just rain and wind. Now, it’s been confirmed.

The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado hit Boone County on June 18, along with tornadoes in two other Kentucky counties.

Tornadoes were also confirmed in Ohio’s Butler and Pike counties and in three Indiana counties.

Over the next few days, the weather service will keep trying to determine if more tornadoes happened June 18.

Here’s what we know about each of those tornadoes from news releases by the National Weather Service:

Boone County, Kentucky, and Dearborn, Ohio counties in Indiana

The tornado started in Indiana’s Dearborn County, moved through Ohio County in Indiana and ended in Boone County, Kentucky.

The tornado traveled about 9 miles over the course of almost 15 minutes, the weather services stated.

It first touched down near Texas Gas Road around 12:14 a.m. and uprooted a large tree along with smaller trees.

As it moved east, a garage was destroyed, a garage roof was lifted, a large tree fell onto a house and smaller trees were snapped at the trunk.

The tornado picked up speed as it moved east toward East Laughery Creek Road, destroying a house and two outbuildings.

The weather service said winds may have been around 130 mph, about an EF-2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, faster than a baseball pitch from some of the most elite professional players.

The tornado damaged more roofs and destroyed trees as it moved across Laughery Creek, along State Road 56, and across the Ohio River.

It lost steam as it entered Boone County and the last observable damage was on Belleview Road where large tree branches were snapped.

Pike County, Ohio

A tornado hit Pike County, Ohio, around 4:05 a.m. on June 18. It lasted about 15 minutes and traveled almost 9 miles.

Winds up to 115 mph damaged trees as it moved from Union Hill Road toward Elm Grove.

There, it damaged outbuildings, barns, homes and trees. Tree damage was noted as far as Sun Fish Creek Road.

Franklin County, Indiana, and Butler County, Ohio

A tornado swept through Franklin County, Indiana, on June 18 and took out trees as it moved east.

At least two roofs were ripped off homes as winds hit around 125 mph. That’s an EF-2 rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The tornado then shifted southeast into Butler County, Ohio, the weather service confirmed late June 18.

A few large tree limbs were knocked down on Schradin Road and winds were estimated to be 65 to 85 mph, about an EF-0.

In total, the tornado stretched about 5.2 miles and lasted about 10 minutes from 1:24 to 1:33 a.m.

Other confirmations

The weather service confirmed tornadoes in Mason and Carroll Counties in Kentucky.

No details are available about those as of 9 p.m. June 19.
