Ashland County student absenteeism rates revealed

ASHLAND— When a student misses school, they are missing out on educational opportunities that can help them throughout life. Missing multiple hours a month could result in hundreds of hours of education lost. Last year in Ohio, over 25% of students were chronically absent, meaning they missed more than 10% of school hours.

While lower than the state average, Ashland students are still missing school with data from the Ohio Attendance Dashboard showing that the county has a chronic absentee rate of 13.7%, or 710 students, as of April 13.

The dashboard also allows users to break down the data by school. When doing so in Ashland, users can see that high schools have the highest chronic absentee rate. Among schools, Budd Elementary has the lowest rate, at 6.4% and Ashland County Community Academy has the highest rate at 59.7%, coming in with the second highest rate is Mapleton High School, with a chronic percentage of 29.9%.
