Akron Pfeiffer and Essex elementary schools damaged by heavy rains

Recent heavy rains have caused damage at two Akron elementary schools.

Stacey Hodoh, spokesperson for Akron Public Schools, said the roofs at Pfeiffer and Essex elementary schools leaked sometime during the district’s spring break, which began March 30.

The damage was discovered around April 2, she said. Students and teachers returned to the schools on April 6.

Hodoh said the district has hired contractors to repair the structural and roofing systems at both locations, while district custodians and maintenance employees have been cleaning the water-damaged areas and coordinating air quality checks.

She said the district had to temporarily relocate one classroom at Pfeiffer to an alternate classroom due to ceiling damage. Some lockers used by Pfeiffer kindergarteners also were affected and some students’ personal belongings may have sustained water damage. Administrators will be working with the impacted students’ families to remedy the situation, Hodoh said.

Parents with concerns regarding damaged personal items are asked to contact their school’s main office.

The district intends to close Pfeiffer Elementary once its new school on the former Kenmore High School site opens in 2028.
