Many were surprised that the New York Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm got ejected by home-plate umpire Mark Wegner in the 9th inning of a tie game against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
The next day, Yankees manager Aaron Boone, a former Red, said Reds catcher Jose Trevino, a former Yankee, contributed to Chisholm’s ejection, per a tweet from MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
“Aaron Boone said ‘there’s a pretty strong case’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. should not have been ejected from last night’s game. Boone said he believes Jose Trevino contributed to the ejection, directing HP umpire Mark Wegner to look at Jazz at 3B,” Hoch tweeted.
“Jazz Chisholm just got thrown out, and really he has nobody to blame but himself,” Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay said during the YES Network broadcast.
MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Dan Plesac shared thoughts about Chisholm’s ejection.
“It looked like he took himself out of this game,” Amsinger said. “Because he just wouldn’t let it go. It looked like he took himself out of the game.”
“This wasn’t a quick hook,” Plesac said. “The umpire let him go ahead and he was able to say his piece. And he just carried on a little bit too long. It wasn’t like it was a quick ejection. … He let Jazz have some room to go ahead and give him an earful. But then he had just had enough.”
“Woo-hoo! A little gamesmanship from a former Yankee!” Amsinger added.
