A pandemic hobby became a thriving Baltimore bakery for Beth Volpe

BALTIMORE − Fox + Mulberry bakery at 114 W. Mulberry St. is known for its sourdough bread.

But the business offers much more.

“We do some sweet treats as well,” owner Beth Volpe said. “Our cinnamon rolls are very popular. We are totally plant-based and we use a lot of local ingredients.”

The bakery has a rotating menu based on the week, offering cakes, cookies, muffins, scones, strawberry sweet rolls and cherry pie sweet rolls.

“We do a lot with whatever is in season,” Volpe said. “For instance, we will have peach cobbler when peaches are in season and stuff like that.”

She opened Fox + Mulberry at its current location four years ago. But Volpe started baking from home seven years ago.

“It’s doing well,” Volpe said. “We stay busy. We do a lot of farmers’ markets, so that’s kind of where our focus is this time of the year.”

She said the COVID-19 pandemic led her to upping baking activities.

“I’m a COVID baker,” Volpe said. “I’ve been baking bread for pretty much my whole life, but I hadn’t tackled sourdough yet. I worked in the event production industry, which was sort of dead in the water as soon as COVID hit. So I was just looking for something to do to kind of chip away at the bills since my income got cut off so suddenly.

“I used the COVID time to test the waters in making sourdough and decided I really liked it. I went to the little Baltimore farmers market with a dozen loaves of bread that first market and sold out really fast. It just kind of grew from there.”

Fox + Mulberry’s hours are sporadic this time of the year. The best way to find its hours is to check on Facebook and Instagram.

“In the off-season, we have more regular hours,” Volpe said. “But right now we’re so busy with farmers’ markets. The best places to find us in Fairfield County this time of the year are the Baltimore farmers market on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. And the Lancaster farmers market on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. We’re at both of those every week all summer.”
