A Dublin-sized Band-Aid

Please allow me to comment on the ongoing controversy happening in Dublin regarding student redistricting for the three high schools. Several maps have been drawn up by Dublin City Schools highlighting the new boundaries. Many parents are upset because they do not want their children to be transferred to schools different from the ones that have traditionally served their neighborhood.

The driving force behind this redistricting is the overcrowding currently taking place at Jerome High School. This overcrowding is the result of the tremendous amount of housing development that has taken place over the last 10 years in northwest Dublin, in Jerome Township and the areas abutting Plain City. Thousands of homes have been constructed, bringing many new students into Dublin schools.

This redistricting effort by DCS is just a Band-Aid, kicking the can down the road for a few years. What is really needed is a fourth high school. Only that will solve this problem. Funds can come from the developers who are building these new homes.

Stop this redistricting effort and address the problem correctly.

A King to say ‘yes’ too

King Charles’s speech to a joint session of Congress should be required viewing for every American. It was a master class in dignity, diplomacy, nuance and intelligence. As Aretha might say: R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

What a soothing balm of a reminder that real leaders don’t need bombast and epically furious rhetoric to make a point and carry the day. There is more power in humor, thoughtful consideration and rhetorical persuasion. Oh, what a vision of possibility. Real diplomacy on the hoof.

Watching the speech was that moment of relaxation when an especially tense situation has been resolved: muscles unknot, feet stretch towards the fire, breathe deeply and imbibing the beverage of choice.

At last, a man who can say what needs saying in the way it needs to be said. God Save the King!
